Descendants of Abraham Aaron

					Generation 1
1. ABRAHAM1 AARON was born about 1734 in Lancaster Co., PA. He died about 1818 in Pittsylvania
Co, VA. He married (UNKNOWN).
Notes for Abraham Aaron:
It it not know where/when Abraham was born. An early researcher put his birth at about 1734
and the U.S. International Marriage Records as 1732, although no primary source is known to
exist. According to Abraham, Jr's Revolutionary War pension application, he (Jr) was born 17
Mar 1859 in Lancaster Co, PA and came with his father to Pittsylvania Co, VA when he was
about 12 years old, which would have been about 1770-71.
There is no primary source which names his wife or wifes, although Judith Dill is the name most
commonly heard as his second wife. The U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1550-1900,
lists Judith Dill as his spouse with them being married in PA and his birth date as 1732.
The names of his children are found in a deed dated 1818 when son Jacob bought land from the
heirs of the late Abraham Arun. They were Abraham, Mary, George, Isaac, Catherine,
Susannah, and Jacob who bought the land from the others.
The first record of Abraham is a land purchase on 27 May 1772 for 210 acres for 50 pounds
from George Jefferson, first cousin of Thomas Jefferson. The land was located on Aaron's
Creek, a branch of Turkey Cock Creek in Pittsylvania Co. He later received four land patents.
The first was for 320 acres signed 1784, the second was for 96 acres signed 1796, the third was
for 400 acres signed 1797 and the fourth was for 220 acres signed 1802. Over time he sold his
land to his children.
On 6 Sep 1977, Abraham subscribed to the Commonwealth of Virginia Oath of Allegiance to the
nation to be taken by all freeborn males above the age of 16 years. Although he did not serve in
the Continental army or in the militia, he assisted in the war effort in numerous ways. He served
as a member of the Grand Jury on several occasions from 1778 to 1782, He was paid for
various goods and services which he provided to the militia, which included beef, forage, brandy,
finding and shoeing horses, repairing guns on several occasions, and sundry repairs. Even
though he was later reimbursed for his services and supplies, Abraham was still taking great risk
in participating in the war effort. In the Patriot Index published by the DAR, Abraham is the first
listing in the book and is recognized for patriotic service.
He appears as head of household in the 1790 US Federal Census for Pittsylvania Co with 10
white souls, 1 building, and 3 other buildings. The 1810 census for the northern district of
Pittsylvania Co which was reconstructed from tax lists, Isaac Aron, Abraham Aron, Jacob Aron,
and Abraham Aron are listed separately as a "white tithable" none owning slaves over the age of
12 yrs, and Abraham and Jacob as owing one horse each and George and Isaac as owning two
horses each. By the 1820 census, only George, Isaac and Jacob Aaron are listed in Pittsylvania
Co. Abraham, Sr has died and Abraham Jr has moved away.
There are numerous spelling of this name with the most common being Aaron, Arnn, and Aron,
although Arun, Eron, and Ernn are found on some early documents.
The information on Abraham came from AARON, ARNN, ARON ANCESTORS - A Family History
by Larry Aaron, printed in Danville, Va, 1987.

Co, VA. She died on 21 Jun 1849 in Henry Co, TN.
Notes for George Washington Aaron:
The earliest record of George are land records, and the earliest land transaction is a deed dated
17 Jul 1797 when he was about 25 years old, He bought 164 acres on Sandy River for 24
pounds. (He may have purchased this land to establish his new household in preparation for his
marriage in Dec of that year.) He is listed in the 1810 census which was reconstructed from tax
lists as a white tithable, no slaves over the age of 12 yrs, and owning two horses. In the 1820
US Federal Census there appears to be nine free white males and five free white females in the
household with no slaves. It lists 2 persons engaged in Agriculture and 2 persons engaged in
Manufactures. Over the years he bought several other properties until by 1825 the land tax
book lists him as having 120, 100, 100 acres each located on Turkey Cock Creek and 134, 40,
72 1/2, and 152 acres each located on Sandy River. George in not listed on the 1830 land tax
records nor afterward because he had sold all of his property by the end of 1829. Probably late
1829 or early 1830 he moved with his wife and most of his children to Henry Co, TN. It appears
that at least two older children - Henry and George - remained in VA since Sarah wrote a letter to
them dated 15 Mar 1830 from Henry Co, In this letter she mentioned that son John was killed
and also mentions a William and Kit as possible children although nothing further is known about
them.
In the 1840 US Federal Census, George is listed with a household of 2 free white males, 1 free
white female, 4 male slaves, 4 female slaves, 6 persons employed in Agriculture and 1 person
employed in manufacture and trade. In the 1850 US Federal Census George is living with his
daughter Ann Walker and her 12 yr old son in Henry Co, TN, his wife having died in 1849. Next
door is his son James Madison and his young family. This census indicates that he was born
about 1772 in VA This would have been shortly after his family arrived in Pittsylvania Co from
Lancaster Co, PA in 1770-71. When he died on 11 Jul 1855, he left a sizable estate. Under
Wills and Inventories 1844-1856, the inventory and account of the sale of the property of George
Arun dec'd is recorded 5 Nov 1855. The six pages list the prices and the buyers of the
belongings in his personal estate. Some items were bought by his children. He was financially
and materially well off, even owning 11 slaves.
Much of the information for the above narrative came from the book, AARON, ARNN, ARON
ANCESTORS - A Family History by Larry Aaron.
A visit to Henry Co, TN in Jul 09 uncovered additional information about the family which is as
follow:
Generation 2 (cont.)
Sarah "Sally" Arnn was received by letter by the Antioch Baptist Church July 1833. This church
was 7 miles north of Paris, TN. Several slaves belonging to George were also received into this
church which was organized 11 Dec 1828.
In the 1836 Henry Co tax list, George is listed in District 13, but no acreage listed, but with 4
slaves. District 13 is just a few miles northeast of Paris. George received a TN land grant #3215
of 228 acres in Henry Co, 26 June 1844. In the 1845 tax list both George Sr and George Jr are
listed in District 13. (The names are spelled Aern.)
A history of the Foundry Hill Branch (1881-1981) of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter Day Saints gives the following information on the Arnns. "Coming to his area from
Virginia, a young man named George (Boss) Arnn, father of Lois Arnn Overcast, opened a
foundry in 1822. (Ed note: George did not arrive in Henry Co until about 1829-1930.) It was the
only one for miles around and became a thriving business. Silverware, and farm tools made
from local ore, were fashioned there and the quality of these projects is still evident as shown in
the items displayed during the Centennial. This foundry was the origin of the name, Foundry Hill
Branch." (Ed Note: Actually, Lois Arnn Overcast was the daughter of George, Jr by his third
wife.) Lois Arnn Overcast, the wife of Cicero Overcast, was the first baptized in this
congregation. Other Arnns are listed as being members of this congregation from 1874 to 1888.
George left an extensive estate when he died 11 Jul 1855. Unfortunately, he did not leave a will
and his personal property was sold at auction on 25 or 29 Oct 1855. The children went to court
over the disposition of his land and slaves in court document first filed in 18 Sep 1855. In the
Henry Co, TN Circuit Court Minutes of 28 Jan 1856, James Bond is administrator of his estate in
the matter of James M. Arnn et als (Ann Walker, Anadab Arnn, Francis Crawford, and husband
John I. Crawford, Samuel V. Frazier, Thaddeus C. Frazier and William W. Frazier, George Arnn,
Jr) vs Henry Arnn and Abihu Arnn for petition for sale of land and slaves and for an account. (Ed
note: The best I can determine is that the slaves were sold in the personal property sale for very
small amounts - $5.00 to $53.00. This may have led to the law suit among the children.
According to court papers Henry and Abihu were not living in TN) There are 14 slaves and 219
acres of land to be sold at the courthouse door in Paris to the highest bidder. Publication was
made in the newspaper as required by law in Oct 1855. The sale took place on the court house
steps on 10 Mar 1856. George, Jr bought the land for $1155.00. William S. Crawford (probably
George's grandson) bought two of the slaves for $251.00. James Madison Arnn purchased a
slave for $1061.00. Ann Walker purchased a slave for $914.00. They had up to 12 months to
pay. This matter was still before the court 23 Jan 1858. The final outcome is not known.
It is thought that George as well as George, Jr and other family members are buried in the
Foundry Hill Baptist Cemetery on Foundry Hill Rd. Although we do not know where Sarah is
buried, it is likely she in there as well. Many head stones have been destroyed.
Notes for Sarah "Sally" Walker:

13. ABIHU3 ARNN (George Washington2 Aaron, Abraham1 Aaron) was born on 23 Sep 1807 in
Pittsylvania Co, VA. He died on 24 Feb 1893 in Conway Co, AR. He married Margaret "Peggy"
Reynolds Blair, daughter of Samuel Brittain Blair and Mary "Polly" Reynolds, on 26 Oct 1829 in
Pittsylvania Co, VA. She was born on 24 Apr 1811 in Pittsylvania Co, VA. She died on 09 Nov
1875 in Independance Co, AR.
Notes for Abihu Arnn:
Abihu was born and grew up in Pittsylvania Co, VA. He married 26 Oct 1829 at the age of 22,
just in time for him and his new wife to move to Henry Co, TN with his parents and siblings. His
last name is most commonly spelled Arnn. It is thought by some researchers that Anadab may
have been his twin. They were in Henry Co by Mar 1830 as evidenced by a letter his mother
wrote to his two oldest brothers who remained in VA. All seven of his children were born in Henry
Co, In the 1840 US Federal Census he is in Henry Co with his wife and 2 girls and 2 boys all
under the age of 10 yrs. In the 1850 US Federal Census they are in District 14 of Henry Co, and
he is listed as a Tinner and six of their seven children had been born. Frances, Samuel and
James had attended school in the past year. In about 1853 after the youngest, John had been
born in 1852, the family moved to Conway Co, AR settling in the western part of the county.
In Jul 1855, his father George died in Henry Co, TN without leaving a will. It appears that he and
his brother Henry went to count against their other siblings over disposition of the estate,
specifically the land and 14 slaves. The land and slaves were sold at auction. The final outcome
is not known. (see narrative for George.)
Generation 3 (cont.)
In the 1860 US Federal Census they are living in Griffin Twp, Conway Co and he is a painter and
tinner. Their post office is Old Hickory and the value of his personal estate is $650. He is not
shown as owning any real estate. Four of the children are living at home - James, Sarah,
Edward and John. The three oldest were married. In the 1870 US Federal Census they are still
in Griffin Twp, Conway Co with Springfield as their post office. He and Peggy have the two
youngest - Edward and John - living at home. He is listed as a farmer with real estate value of
$80 and personal estate value of $350. Daughter Frances Gregory and her family are living
nearby.
It is recorded in the Little Rock land office that he purchased 50.55 acres on 25 Nov 1879. This
property was SW of Old Hickory, adjoining the Pope Co line just north of State Hwy 247. The
1880 US Federal Census finds him living in Gregory Twp in the household of his daughter Mary
Ann Houston and her family. (Peggy had died in 1875.) It is said that he died at Moss, Conway
Co and is buried in Mt. Vernon Cemetery although there is no marker. There is a marker for his
wife in that cemetery.
In "Western Arkansas Biographie and Memoirs" which appears to be written about 1890, A. Arnn,
tinner, is listed in a list of principle business interests of Atkins.
Some researchers report (unproven) that Abraham (his grandfather) was Dutch and that several
of his descendants were named after Jewish High Priests. A Samuel Blair (Margret's father)
ancestor stated in 1997 that "My grandmother said that Margaret R. Blair had been disowned.
She believed it was because the man she married, Abihu, was Jewish." We have no way of
knowing if this is true and it is interesting to note that Margaret's sister, Joanna, married Abihu's
cousin Berryman, seven years after their own marriage.

Notes for Edward McBride Arnn:
Generation 4 (cont.)
Edward McBride first appears in the 1850 US Federal Census as a one year old. The Abihu
Arnn Family Bible spells his name as Edward Mackbride. He was born in Henry Co, TN and
came with his family to Conway Co, AR about 1853. In the 1860 US Federal Census he is 8
years old living with his family in Griffin Twp, Conway Co with Old Hickory as their post office. In
the 1870 US Federal Census he is 21 years old living with his family in the same location.
He was almost 26 years old when he married. Apparently he went by the name of "Mack" since
this was on his marriage document. He and Martha were married in Pope Co, probably in Atkins.
In the 1880 US Federal Census they are living in Atkins in Pope Co and his occupation is listed
as Undertaker. He and Martha have three children and his youngest brother is living with them
and also a border. The cause of his death is not known and he is buried with his wife in Atkins
City Cemetery. His head stone reads Edward McBride Arnn.
Notes for Martha Washington Stepp:
According to family history Martha's parents and their first three children and her maternal
grandparents, Mary and David Pew (Pugh) and their children arrived in Pope Co, AR from Cape
Girardeau, MO about 1852. They were farmers, settling about one and one-half miles northeast
east of Atkins in Wilson Twp. Martha first appears in the 1860 US Federal Census as a 4 year
old living with her family in Wilson Twp, Pope Co, AR. Her father is a farmer with a real estate
value of $2000 and personal property valued at $1200. Martha was only five years old when her
father, William Welch Stepp died of measles at Moorsville, MS 14 Jun 1862 while serving as a
confederate soldier in Company C, John L. Williamson's vol Arkansas Calvary. In the 1870 US
Federal Census she is 13 years old living with her mother, uncle and siblings. The value of her
mother's real estate is $1500 and personal estate valued at $550. She married her husband
four years later in 1874.
In the 1880 US Federal Census she is living in Atkins with her husband, three children, her
brother-in-law and a border. At the time of her husband's death 5 Oct 1884, she had four living
children. Two months after her husband's death, she lost her youngest child, Almost exactly two
years later she married her second husband, Jim Williams, who brought to the marriage two
children from two previous marriages. Together they had six children. After her second marriage
she and her three daughters moved to Gregory Twp, Conway Co where Jim owned a large farm.
In the 1900 US Federal Census they are in Gregory Twp, Conway Co. There are 14 people in
the household, including her mother-in-law. By the 1910 US Federal Census there are only the
two youngest children living at home with their parents in Gregory Twp. In 1913 they moved into
Atkins, Pope Co so the two children could go to high school. The homestead and land were
rented out for many years thereafter. (His estate was not settled until 1971 when the land was
sold.) In the 1920 and 1930 US Federal Census they are still living in Atkins and Jim still lists
himself as a farmer. After her husband died in 1934 she continued to live in Atkins, dying at her
home at the age of 91 years. In the 1940 US Federal Census she is widowed and living alone,
on Block 8, Atkins. She owns here own home valued at $1000 and has completed a 6th grade
education and was receiving some type of pension greater than $50 per month. She was quoted
as "being the sickliest one of her family" on her 91 st birthday. Services were held at the Church

Notes for Henrietta "Etta" Arnn:
Henrietta first appears in the 1880 US Federal Census in Wilson Twp, Pope Co, AR as a 3 year
old with her parents (her father is an undertaker), her older sister, an unnamed younger brother,
her uncle who is a cabinet maker and a female border.
Etta is enumerated twice In the 1900 US Federal Census. In one she is living with her family in a
large household of 14 people in Gregory Twp, Conway Co, AR. Her mother had remarried after
her father died in 1884, and her stepfather had a son from each of two previous marriages, plus
her mother and stepfather had six children together. Her stepfather is a farmer. In the other
census she is living with her maternal grandmother and aunt in Wilson Twp, Pope Co, AR.
Considering the number of people and noise at home, it's no wonder she was living with her
grandmother. She is not listed as having an occupation.
In a letter to her son Perry, dated 5 Feb 1965, she described her wedding day. (The date of the
letter was her 60th wedding anniversary.) She must have been in Atkins when she wrote it.
"Well today doesn't look like it did in 1905 in Ark (Atkins) there was a foot of snow on the ground
and the sun was shining. It was a beautiful day. . ." In the same letter she writes about when
they left AR by train for Indian Territory (OK). "It was a beautiful day then in 1907 we left
Arkansaw Feb 14th you was about 1 year and 2 months old and it was another beautiful day but
cold. We stayed all nite in Morrilton with my cousin and wife on Father side John Hawk Houstin
he was my second cousin. His father and mother was good christians she wasn't afraid to shout
they were Presbytearns people shouted because they felt like they were on their way to Heaven
instread of Hell."
In about 1945 she and Ed moved permanently to Washington D.C. to live with their son Perry
and his family. In her later years after her husband died in 1952 she often traveled back and
forth across the United States by Greyhound bus with her sister Myrtle, visiting various members
of the family.
Generation 5 (cont.)
Etta had been living for a short time at the Greenbelt Convalescent Center in MD when she died
as a result of throat cancer. She had had surgery several years earlier and was unable to speak.
She left a will dated 27 May 1956. In it she left $1.00 each to her three sons, Truesdell, Howard
and Warden. She left to her son Perry all of her remaining estate.
Notes for Edward Payson Cunningham:
In the 1870 US Federal Census, Ed is a 2 year old living with his parents in Illinois Twp,
Washington Co, AR, Cincinnati post office. He and his family are not found in the 1880 US
Federal Census. They would have been living in the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory (OK) by
this time. Son Perry wrote "At an early age the family moved in to what then was known as the
Indian Territory, living for a while near what is now Muskogee, Okla, and for an extended period
in and around Pryor Creek near Claremore and Vanita."
(added Jan 2016) Ed is listed with his entire family in the Cherokee Census, 1890. This was the
Oklahoma and Indian Territory, Indian Censuses and Rolls, 1851-1959 which listed persons
residing in said District, not recognized as Cherokee Citizens and who are under permit, either by
the Nation or U.S. In this census John Henry is a laborer, arrived in the Nation Apr 1872, have 9
horses and 8 cows. (I can't read what district they are in.)
Perry wrote, "Since cattle raising and grazing was the principal activity in that section of the
Territory, he spent most of his time as a young man in "cow punching". A good horse, a good
saddle, and a good pair of boots were considered primary requisites of such occupation. Life as
a "cowpuncher" was spent out in the open, literally eating and sleeping out in the open under the
sky and riding."
Cousin Paul related the following story. "In the early 60s, I went with my dad and granddad to
visit Gus, my great uncle. (He was Ed's younger brother.) Gus lived in Hutchinson, KS. It was
the only time that I ever saw him alive. He was about 90 years old and terminally ill. My
granddad wanted to visit him to pray with him and try to get him to turn his life to the Lord. Even
at 90, he was still pretty tough and salty. I don't remember why or what started him to tell a story
about his childhood. He said that when he was a small boy about 7 years old, (this would have
been about 1882) the Cunninghams (John H, Joe, Ed, their mother and others) decided to move
to Oregon. They were camped near Coffeyville, KS waiting to join up with a wagon train to go
over the Oregon Trail. They had 7-8 wagons and had traded all of their horses for mules except
for one mare horse. Gus said they were camped on this particular day in a grove of trees.
During the day, 2 cowboys rode by several times trailing their lariats. They thought they were
just cowboys doing their job. That night, they heard a commotion outside. Gus said that his
uncles went out to investigate. It was these 2 cowboys trying to steal the mare. Gus said that
they tied up the mare and hobbled the mules at night. That way, the mules would not stray far
and would stay close to the mare. If the horse thieves could steal the mare and lead her away,
the mules would follow until they were away from the camp. Then, they could catch the mules,
unhobble them and be on their way. Gus said that his uncle (Hut) shot and killed one of the
horse thieves. He thought that he had wounded the other one, but wasn't sure. The next day
the wagon train began their trek and stared west. Gus said that they came to a telegraph shack
alongside the railroad about sundown. Outside, tied to a telegraph pole was a saddle horse.
Setting in the saddle was a half empty bottle of whiskey. Inside the shack was the other cowboy.
He was wounded. Gus ended his story by saying (and I remember his words clearly), "When
sunup come, we hung him. We didn't think much of horse thieves in those days"
In a narrow grave just six by three,
They buried him there on the lone prairie.
And forever after, there was an empty chair around the dinner table where a mother, father, wife,
or sisters waited and wondered why their beloved one did not ever come back home. Justice
was sometimes sure and quick on the frontier. It was serious to steal someone's horses and
leave them and their families stranded with limited water and food and no transportation. The
Cunninghams traveled to Wyoming and then decided not to continue and returned home to OK.
Forever after, I am told that Emily would not go on a picnic. She said that she had burned her
hands too often cooking around an open campfire."
Generation 5 (cont.)
Paul's Grandpa told him another story. "Ed was a cowboy at age 16. Another cowboy hired Ed
to run calves for him. The other cowboy worked on a large spread about 10 miles from his
ranch. During the daytime, he would rope a calf, hide it in the brush, and Ed would come at night
and carry it back on his horse to the ranch. He paid Ed $1 for each calf he carried. Ed said he
thought he and the other cowboy were partners, but he was sure glad they were not when the
other cowboy got caught. Grandpa could name several prominent OK ranchers who got their
start swinging their lariat in the moonlight. He said they gained respectability after they built up a
large ranch and had money, if they hadn't gotten caught."
Paul also tells the following story passed down from his grandfather, Ed's brother. "He said that
Ed was working as a cowboy on a ranch near Vinita or Miami, OK. One of the other cowboys
working on the ranch was Emmet Dalton. Emmet's brothers showed up one evening and wanted
Emmet to go to Coffeyville to rob the bank there. Emmet was going to go but Ed said that they
talked him out of going with them. However, Emmet's brothers had some moonshine whiskey
with them and Emmet got to drinking. Later that evening, maybe about 10 or 11 o'clock, Emmet
decided to go with them. Ed said that they rode all night and entered Coffeyville the next
morning. You know the rest of the story."
(Editor's Note): The famous bank robbery was 5 Oct 1892. According to the histories of the
Dalton Gang, Emmett Dalton for the most part earned a living as a cowboy working on the Bar X
Bar Ranch near the Pawnee Agency. There is no evidence where or if Emmett was working on a
ranch at the time of the robbery.
It was 16 Sep 1893 that Ed claimed land in the Cherokee Strip Land Run and registered that
claim at the Enid Land Office. In these records, he is listed as Ed Cunningham, Pryor Creek, I.
T, and his land was in the northeast corner of what was later to become Garfield Co. He was
just a month short of his 25th birthday. Cousin Paul tells the following story which was passed
down in his family. Ed told his brother "that when they shot the pistol at twelve noon, he took off
along with all the rest of them. He said that those with fast horse passed him like he was sitting
still. However, Ed had a good saddle horse and about 2-4 in the afternoon, he began to pass
them. Ed located a claim and staked it out. He had just finished when an old geezer came out
of the woods on a nag and said, "Hey, this is my claim." Ed looked at him and looked at his
horse and knew that he couldn't have made the run since noon. Ed drew his pistol, cussed the
man, and said, "If you are still in my sight in 3 minutes, I will give you a claim 6 feet long and 3
feet deep." Ed said that the old geezer didn't waste any time getting out of there and that was
the last that he ever saw of him." Paul goes on the say that Ed made the run with his brother-inlaw,
Cal Rosecrants, and after a year, Ed sold his claim to Rosencrants.
The 1900 US Federal Census finds a 31 yr old Ed living in his parent's household as a farm
laborer living in Twp 27, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory. According to son, Perry "When
approximately 34 years old (about 1902), they moved back to Arkansas and this time settled in
Conway County where he met and courted Miss Henrietta Arnn." According to a letter by
Henrietta, they left AR for Indian Territory (OK) by train on 14 Feb 1907 when son Perry was a
little over 1 year old. (See the notes for Henrietta for more details.) Son, Perry said that they
"moved back into the Territory near Edna, KS where soon after he was converted in meetings
being conducted in the "Thompson" school house. His conversion stemmed from such deep
conviction as to cause him to give up such habits as drinking and smoking."
In Jun 1908 (when Truesdell was born) they were living 7 miles south of Edna, KS in Craig Co,
OK. The 1910 US Federal Census finds them living in Hickory Twp, Nowata Co, OK, where Ed
is a farmer on a general farm, working on his own account, renting his farm. In Apr 1911 (when
Howard was born), and Nov 1912 (when Warden was born) they were living on the Greer farm in
Nowata Co. It is not known where the Greer farm was. Son, Howard said the farm was between
Wann and Coffeyville, KS with Coffeyville being their big town (and their post office).
According to son, Truesdell, the family moved to Wann, Nowata Co about 1914 where according
to Howard they moved into a box car house, and their Dad took on odd jobs.
In the 1920 US Federal Census they are still living in Hickory Twp, Nowata Co. However, Ed is
Generation 5 (cont.)
now an oiler in a gasoline plant. He is renting his home and apparently has 2 young men living
in the household as renters, also working at the gasoline plant. Everyone was a wage worker.
Howard describes this period as follows: "Dad got a good job with Carter Oil Company as oiler,
about five miles from Wann. We lived at the lease and had a Company house. We bought our
first automobile, a Model T Ford Touring. We had better times for a while. We rode the bus to
school. . . .Unfortunately this job folded within a year and we moved back to Wann. . . .Back in
Wann we bought a home for $1000 from Mr. Reynolds. Dad became Head Custodian for the
Wann School which housed all Elementary and High school grades. We boys all worked to help
him with the job."
According to Truesdell, the family moved to Bartlesville in 1926 when he graduated from Wann
High School. Howard said "Dad learned of a job opportunity in a dairy near Bartlesville. We sold
our home in Wann for $1000 and moved to the dairy at Bartlesville for one year. Both Dad and
sons could work at the dairy, milking cows, etc. . . After this year we moved into Bartlesville. . . .
Dad and Mom did home laundry to help pay expenses." According to the 1927 Bartlesville City
Directory, they were living at 1600 W 2nd, with Ed listed as "farmer" and the three oldest boys as
"student". According to the 1929 City Directory, they are living at 110 S Seminole Ave, with Ed
listed as "lab" (laborer), Howard "mailer Morning Examiner" and Truesdell "sten" (stenographer).
The 1930 US Federal Census shows that they are living in Bartlesville, Washington Co, OK. It
shows them living on South Kaw Ave on the west side where they are renting for $27 per month.
Ed's occupation is a janitor on a ranch. Perry works in special deliveries for the post office dept,
Truesdell is a stenographer in the cement plant office, Howard in a printer in a printing office and
Warden is 17 years old and unemployed. However, according to the 1930 City Directory, they
are living at 401 South Creek Ave and Ed is listed as "clk Phillips Pet Co", Howard "mailer
Examiner Co", Perry "clk", Truesdell "mailer Examiner Co, Warden unemployed. (There appear
to be errors in this directory. The Census is probably much more accurate for the occupations.)
According to court records, they bought the house at 401 SE Creek Ave 6 Jun 1930. Howard
said that after Perry came home from graduating from college (1929), they all worked and
"Together we bought a nice house in East Bartlesville.. sharing costs - four grown sons and
parents - for a few years." The 1933 City Directory shows them living at 401 S Creek Ave with
Ed not listed with a job, Howard "stero (stereotyper) Examiner Co, Truesdell "clk Examiner Co,
and Warden, no job. The house was sold 1 Mar 1935. The 1935 City Directory shows them
living at 423 S Comanche Ave with Ed "circulation dept", Howard "stereo" (stereotyper), and
Warden "circulation dept Examiner Co".
Court records show that Ed and Etta bought 10 acres with a house from D. A. and Vivian Jones
on 19 Feb 1935. It appears that they purchased the property for about $1911.00. At that time
the address was Rt 1 Box 301 in the nearby Tuxedo community. The address later became 710
NE Washington Blvd. They are at this address when Warden joined the Army in Aug 1939. In
the 1940 US Federal Census they are living in Jackson Twp, Washington, Dewey and Tuxedo
Road, Tuxedo, own their own home valued at $3000 where they were also living on 1 Apr 1935.
Ed is listed as having a 4th grade education, worked a 24 hour week as a route carrier for the
Examiner newspaper, earned $750 a month and worked 52 weeks in 1939. Etta is listed with an
8th grade education. Grandson Forrest remembers that Ed delivered newspapers during this
time, and in fact, the 1940 Bartlesville Directory lists him as "driver Examiner Co". Truesdell and
his family moved into this house in Feb 1941. In Apr 1941 there is evidence that Ed and Etta are
living with Perry and Alma on Owen Place, Washington D.C. (In April Alma was three months
pregnant and Glenn was born that Oct. According to Grandson Perry, she had a number of
miscarriages and may have been on bed rest so they may have gone to help take care of Perry.)
It was not until 6 Nov 1942, however, that Truesdell and Ruby bought the house and property
from Ed and Etta for about $2250.00. In Dec 1943 Ed and Etta are living at 1232 Wyandotte St
in Dewey (there is no longer a house at this address) and in Jul 1945 they are living at 618 E. 6
th Ave in Dewey, across from the Nazarene church. In the front of one of his Bibles is the
following information: "618 East 6th St, Dewey, Okla, 5-17-45" When we visited them at this last
address, Forrest and I remember him eating peas with a knife! We also remember the ice truck
delivering ice for the icebox based on a card stuck in the screen door which listed various
pounds of ice. Sometime in the mid 1940s they moved permanently to Washington D.C, living
Generation 5 (cont.)
with Perry and family at 1263 Monroe St. NE.
Perry ended his Dad's bio by saying "He considers himself a pioneer of Oklahoma and even now
longs to be back in his native haunts."
Edward Payson Cunningham and Henrietta "Etta" Arnn had the following children:
66. i. EDWARD PERRY6 CUNNINGHAM was born on 24 Dec 1905 in Hattieville, Conway Co,
AR. He died on 25 Oct 1989 in Washington Hospital Center, Washington, DC. He
married Elma Lou Kitchen, daughter of Emmett Lee Kitchen and Cora Lee
Branch, on 01 Sep 1934 in Washington, DC. She was born on 20 Jun 1912 in
Wakefield, Sussex Co, VA. She died on 20 Nov 1996 in Washington, DC.
67. ii. FORREST TRUESDELL "TRUES" CUNNINGHAM was born on 08 Jun 1908 in Craig Co,
OK (7 miles South of Edna, KS). He died on 05 Sep 1964 in St. John's Hospital,
Tulsa, Tulsa Co, OK. He married Ruby L Cunningham, daughter of William "Willie"
Alfred Fain and Magnolia "Nola" Stockstill, on 18 May 1934 in Bartlesville,
Washington Co, OK (at the Presbyterian Manse). She was born on 11 Nov 1906
in Ceder Co, MO. She died on 17 Oct 1985 in St Francis Hospital, Tulsa, Tulsa
Co, OK.
68. iii. HARRY HOWARD CUNNINGHAM was born on 10 Apr 1911 in Greer Farm, Nowata
Co, OK. He died on 18 Mar 1996 in San Bernardino, San Bernardino Co., CA. He
married Thelma Goldie Rouintree, daughter of Harvey Leander Rouintree and
Margaret "Peggy" Alva Baty, on 14 Apr 1935 in Nowata, Nowata Co, OK. She was
born on 22 Aug 1907 in Cull, Howell Co, MO. She died on 10 Apr 1989 in Chino,
San Bernardino Co, CA.
iv. WARDEN YOUNG CUNNINGHAM was born on 01 Nov 1912 in Greer Farm, Nowata
Co, OK. He died on 08 Jun 1971 in Seattle, King Co, WA. He married LIVING
CROZIER.
Notes for Warden Young Cunningham:
Warden's birth certificate does not list a middle name. His death certificate lists
the initial "Y" in the middle name block. Family records all indicate his middle
name was "Young" although this name is not used on any legal documents
including his Army and Merchant Marine records. It is interesting to note that the
1920 U.S. Federal Census lists his name as Paul W and the 1935 Bartlesville City
Directory as P Warden. He was born on the Greer Farm between Wann and
Coffeeville. Wann is listed on his birth certificate.
See information on his early life in the notes for his parents. According to brother
Howard's memories, Warden was call "Wamp" by his family when he was a child.
He would have been 11 years old when his parents moved to Bartlesville.
According to his Army records he completed 8 years of grammar school and 1
year of high school. In the 1930 US Federal Census he was 17 years old and
unemployed. However, this was during the Depression when it was not easy to
get a job. The 1935 Bartlesville City Directory stated his job as "circulation dept
Examiner Co".
Warden was considered to be the black sheep of the family and according to
Cousin Paul his father (Ed) said he was no good and had harsh things to say
about him. According to the 1940 US Federal Census, he is 27 years old, single,
in the US Army stationed at Ft William Davis Military Reservation, Cristobal,
Panama Canal as a Private First Class, working 52 hours a week. He completed
9 years of schooling. According to his US WWII Army Enlistment Records, he
enlisted in the Regular Army, Chemical Warfare Service branch on 11 Aug 1939.
He would have been 26 years old. It lists his marital status as Divorced, with
dependents. His address is given as Rt 1 Box 301, Bartlesville, the home of his
parents. He entered the service at Ft Lewis, WA and was separated there on 25
Jul 1945 "for the convenience of the government" because of demobilization.
Generation 5 (cont.)
There is a great deal of information to be found in his Enlistment Record and
Report of Separation. He received an honorable discharge, held the rank of PFC,
was in the infantry and in the regular army. He was assigned to Hq Company, 1st
Battalion, 253rd Infantry, permanent address 618 E. 6th St, Dewey, OK (his
parent's address), had blue eyes, brown hair, was 5'7", wt 157 lbs, white, single, a
US citizen, no civilian occupation. His military history is interesting. Apparently
his first job was as a Quartermaster supply technician, he qualified as a
marksman with a rifle, his battles and campaigns were Northern France,
Rhineland, Central Europe, and his decorations and citations were the Good
Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal, American Defense Service
Medal, and European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal. Apparently he got
into some trouble along the way since his highest grade held was SSgt but his
discharge rank was PFC. This was not the whole story however. Letters to/from
his mother show that he did not write to her regularity and as a result, on more
than one occasion she wrote to his company commander regarding his health and
whereabouts. In one letter to her dated 21 Jan 1940 it says he has been in the
Panama Canal since 29 Aug last year and has reenlisted for three years.
Apparently he was sent to Panama as soon as he enlisted. A reply from the War
Dept dated 18 Apr 1941 in response to his mother's request for information stated
that he was a Corporal, Guard and Service Company, Post of Corozal, Canal
Zone. Apparently he returned to the US Aug 1941 where he remained until Aug
1943 at which time he was deployed to Europe where he remained until he
returned to Ft Lewis for discharge. In a letter dated 30 Dec 1943 he wrote to his
mother (in response to her letter to his company commander) that he was
stationed in Iceland and had been for some months. In a note dated either Jul or
Sep 1944 he said he was in France. In the tone of his brief responses to his
Mother, he was not happy that she was writing to his company commander, He
was stationed for a total of almost 4 years overseas and almost 2 years in the US.
Three months after his military service ended he joined the Merchant Marines
where he was a seaman from several weeks to several months at a time. His first
date of shipment was 18 Oct 1945 from Portland, OR (his job was as a Mess
man) and he returned from his last shipment 29 Jul 1968 in Seattle (his jobs were
Boson and Able Seaman). In a 1946 New York Passenger List which states his
length of service at sea as 6 months, he shipped or engaged on 21 May 1946 in
Portland, OR, his position was a Wiper (in the engine room?) was 33 years old, 5'
8", 165 lbs with tattoos on both forearms. He most always was engaged out of
Portland, and his position was usually listed as A. B. (able seaman). There is only
one known time that he had a problem when in the Merchant Marines. On 3 Jan
1968 the Person Charged failed to join the vessel upon its departure from the port
of DaNang, Vietnam. He " together with the rest of his watch and the day man
having the day off on 3 January, went ashore with the knowledge of the vessel
and without the sailing board having been posted, at a time when the estimated
time for completing discharge of cargo was three days. For reasons unknown to
the Person Charged and to this record, the vessel sailed at 6 o'clock..." The US
Coast Guard heard the case in San Francisco and on 14 Mar 1968 suspended a
one month suspension.
On 12 Aug 1970 (after he left the Merchant Marines) he made application to carry
a concealed weapon for "protection". He lists his business address as Burns Det.
Agency, Seattle. Then on 20 Aug 1970 a complaint was sworn out against him for
the crime of "assault in the second degree." He shot a .38 Colt revolver and "did
willfully inflict grievous bodily harm." Apparently he was held in jail because he
was unable to make bond. Disposition of the case is not known.
He married sometime during the mid 1950s and was divorced probably in 1957. I
remember that in the 1950s we were sent a color 8 x 10 glamor photo of the
attractive woman he had married. In a letter from Truesdell to his mother dated
27 Jan 1958, he says "I'm still praying for Warden. We sent them a Christmas
Generation 5 (cont.)
card didn't know they had quit. It's just as well." He may have been married
again a few years later. There is CA Marriage Index for a Warden Cunningham
age 50 (born about 1913) and Patricia T. Crozier age 47 (born about 1916),
married 9 Jan 1963 in Los Angeles. He died of pneumonia in his room in a Settle
residential hotel at the age of 58 years.
The inscription on his head stone reads S.U.P (Sailor's Union of the Pacific).
54. WILMA MYRTLE5 ARNN (Edward McBride4, Abihu3, George Washington2 Aaron, Abraham1 Aaron)
was born on 27 Oct 1881 in Atkins, Pope Co, AR. She died on 10 Nov 1965 in Los Altos Hills,
Santa Clara Co, CA. She married (1) WILLIAM HOMER "JOHN" STOUT, son of William Winfield Stout
and Harriet M. Peck, on 20 Sep 1909 in Pope Co, AR. He was born on 27 Aug 1881 in Conway
Co, AR. He died on 05 Oct 1923 in Tucson, Pima Co, AZ. She married (2) EDWARD LEE
SCHRIMSHER, son of Jasper N. Schrimsher, between 1924-1928 in Yavapai Co, AZ. He was born
on 13 Oct 1872 in Muskogee, Muskogee Co, OK. He died on 02 Oct 1935 in Tucson, Pima Co,
AZ.
Notes for Wilma Myrtle Arnn:
Myrtle sent a note to her sister dated 22 Dec 1909 on letterhead of the Chicago, Rock Island &
Pacific Railway Co, Accounting Department. They were living at 6434 Jackson Ave. In the 1910
US Federal Census, they are still living in Chicago.
Her daughter Margaret Stout Burke wrote a narrative about her father. "When John Stout
married Myrtle Arnn in 1909, they left Arkansas for John to take a position with the railroad in
Chicago. After their first child was delivered still-born, John became restless to move, so he
applied for a job with the Southern Pacific railroad in Walnut Creek, CA. Their trip west included
a stop-over in Tucson, AZ. We were told that when John stepped off the train in Tuscon, he
looked around at the valley and beautiful mountains and said, "This is where I want to spend the
rest of my life." He then went into the office at the depot to ask if they had an opening in Tuscon.
They did, and he accepted on the spot. Later, John sold the property he purchased in Walnut
Creek, just as he had bought it, sight unseen.
"When the Stouts arrived in Arizona, it was about to become the baby state, and John saw a
great potential in real estate. In the following 13 years to his death, John purchased two rental
properties, a small house and a duplex. Next he found a large, brick, fully furnished home for
the family. then built another duplex on the lot adjoining the home. John was smart, diligent and
ambitious and his vision in property allowed his widow to remain in Tucson and to raise their
children without hardship, as well as to enable her to live all her 84 years independently. . .The
flu epidemic after World War One took John at the age of 43. He is buried in a common grave
with his son John Arnn." who died from swallowing a pin in 1916.
In the 1920 US Federal Census they are living in Tucson with three children and John is working
for the railroad. After John died in 1923, she married at second time to a man who was a meat
cutter. He is described by a step-granddaughter as not being a very nice man. In the 1930 US
Federal Census, he is listed as a meat cutter in a grocery store. They they would have been
married sometime between 1924 and 1930. He died in 1935. In the 1940 US Federal Census,
she is a widow living in the same location with three children living at home, as well as a lodger.
In her later years she traveled around the country on a Greyhound bus with her sister Etta,
visiting various members of the family. According to her obituary she died in Los Altos Hills, CA
while visiting her daughter, Martha Hodges, was a resident of Tucson since 1910, and was active
in church work at the Church of Christ.
William Homer "John" Stout and Wilma Myrtle Arnn had the following children:
i. BABY6 STOUT was born on 04 Jul 1910 in Chicago, Cook Co, IL. Baby died on 04
Jul 1910 in Chicago, Cook Co, IL.
Notes for Baby Stout:
According to Stout Family Genealogy Site, the baby was stillborn.

Santa Clara Co, CA.
Notes for Edward Lee Schrimsher:
According to census records and other documents he was 1/4 Creek Indian and was born near
Muskogee,OK when it was Indian Territory. The 1900 and 1910 US Federal Census lists him as
married with one daughter and he is a butcher/meat cutter. It appears from the 1920 US Federal
Census that he may be married for a second time and living as a boarder in a rooming house

Notes for Edward Perry Cunningham:
See the notes for Perry's parents for information on his early life.
Perry graduated from Wann High School in May 1925 and was the first Cunningham to go to
college. He graduated from Bethany Peniel College (now Southern Nazarene University) in May
1929 with a BA degree in history. He returned to Bartlesville, where his family had moved in
1926. The Great Depression was starting and from May 1929 to Jul 1930 he worked at
miscellaneous jobs in Bartlesville, living at home with his parents, In the 1930 US Federal
Census, Perry at age 24 years is working in special deliveries for the post office department,
From Jul 1930 to May 1931 he worked for the Phillips Petroleum Co as an accounting clerk until
he was laid off because of the depression. He returned to Phillips that Dec but resigned to move
to Washington D.C.
Generation 6 (cont.)
From Jan 1932 to Feb 1935 he worked at the U.S. Department of Agriculture library as a junior
librarian. During this period (Sep 1932 - May 1934) he was taking graduate courses at George
Washington University, accumulating 12 credit hours. In Sep 1934 he married and established
their home as 1271 Owens Place, N.E. In about 1940-41 they purchased a large 2-story home
at 1263 Monroe St, NE. In Feb 1935 he went to work for the Internal Revenue Service in the tax
rulings area, and worked for the IRS for the rest of his professional life. In the 1940 US Federal
Census, they are living at 1276 Owen Place where they were also living on 1 Apr 1935, renting
their home for $35 a month. Elma's sister is living with them and their young son. Perry is listed
as having completed 5 years of college, working a 35 hour week as a correspondent clerk for the
Internal Revenue for $2000 per month, having worked 52 weeks in 1939. Elma has completed
four years of high school.
He died of complications related to progressive dementia over the last seven years of his life.
His son Perry wrote the following about his father:
He was an active/devoted church member and held every layperson office in the local Nazarene
church in Washington, DC, including Sunday school teacher, church treasurer, Nazarene Young
Peoples president and church board member for over 50 years. He was at his best as a
greeter/usher, where he was a welcoming presence to all.
Devotion to family and home handyman projects filled his life. He loved people particularly in the
local Christian social group as well as in secular settings. Party gatherings and Rook card game
playing were some of his favorites. Besides his church activities, he was involved in local
community civic activities and served as president for the community "Brookland Civic
Association". During WWII he participated in local civic "air warden" duties of his community. He
was active in the local PTA at both the junior and senior high school levels, this involved being
PTA president at the local senior high school during the initial school desegregation period in DC
and he was elected as a regional PTA representative to the National PTA in the middle 1950's.
He loved sports particularly basketball, baseball and football and played softball in the local
church league. He went to local college basketball games and "Senator" baseball games at old
Griffin stadium. One of his greatest interests was in world and particularly US history/politics (he
completed some initial post graduate level studies in history at George Washington University in
Washington, DC). He was a lover of literature and could quote sections of English poetry. He
loved nature and art, particularly landscapes and birds. Museums and monuments in
Washington with their historical significance were some of his favorite outings. He would take the
family to parades in Washington and attend the National Geographic world film lectures in
Constitution Hall.
Notes for Elma Lou Kitchen:
The following is written by her son Perry.
Elma Lou Kitchen, born in Wakefield, VA was proud of her southern roots! She loved people,
particularly church and community. She was well known to neighbors and had close association
with the Catholic convent and subsequent priest priory "next door". During the Depression Years
she moved to Washington, DC and following the death of both parents by the age of 17, she
became responsible for two other younger sisters and one brother. Because of her early
struggles, she had a strong family focus and was the devoted mother of two sons. A member of
the local Nazarene church in Washington, her activities includes Sunday school teacher and
juniors program leader for several years. Additionally, she was an avid supporter/sponsor of the
church teenage fellowship.
Before her marriage to Perry, she was a model for the Hecht Department Store in Washington.
She later returned to work where she had a long work history as an office worker for the labor
union of postal clerks and The National Geographic Society. She was active in the local schools
and was a junior and high school PTA president and vice president during the 1950's school
desegregation years in Washington.
Generation 6 (cont.)
For many years she managed her large 2-story home on Monroe St as a boarding house and
room rental for Catholic University women in graduate studies and other professional singles and
US government workers. She also had the responsibility of looking after her husband's elderly
parents who lived with them for many years.
The Washington Redskins pro football team had no more avid supporter than Elma. She played
basketball as a child and also loved watching the Washington pro basketball team. She was
culturally oriented with a high priority on learning and life experience. Some of her favorite
pastimes included sewing, cooking, decorating her house and gardening (flowers and
vegetables).
Edward Perry Cunningham and Elma Lou Kitchen had the following children:
i. NANCY LEE7 CUNNINGHAM was born on 16 Mar 1938 in Sibley Hospital,
Washington, DC. She died on 14 Feb 1939 in Washington, DC.
Notes for Nancy Lee Cunningham:
Nancy died as a result of multiple congenital defects.
79. ii. LIVING CUNNINGHAM JR.. He married LIVING HARDING.
iii. LIVING CUNNINGHAM. He married LIVING MANWARING.
67. FORREST TRUESDELL "TRUES"6 CUNNINGHAM (Henrietta "Etta"5 Arnn, Edward McBride4 Arnn,
Abihu3 Arnn, George Washington2 Aaron, Abraham1 Aaron) was born on 08 Jun 1908 in Craig
Co, OK (7 miles South of Edna, KS). He died on 05 Sep 1964 in St. John's Hospital, Tulsa, Tulsa
Co, OK. He married Ruby L Cunningham, daughter of William "Willie" Alfred Fain and Magnolia
"Nola" Stockstill, on 18 May 1934 in Bartlesville, Washington Co, OK (at the Presbyterian
Manse). She was born on 11 Nov 1906 in Ceder Co, MO. She died on 17 Oct 1985 in St Francis
Hospital, Tulsa, Tulsa Co, OK.
Notes for Forrest Truesdell "Trues" Cunningham:
Notes for Truesdell's parents describe his early years.
Cousin Paul tells the following story passed down from his father. "Daddy said that when he was
a boy living in AR (Conway Co) Ed and his family would periodically visit. They would visit Etta's
sister and her family and then they would come by and visit with grandpa (Alfred). One time
when they came for a visit Truesdell wanted to ride a bull. He said that he was rather insistent
on riding. He selected a large calf that daddy said was pretty gentle. Daddy and Morrice held
the bull and helped Truesdell get on. He didn't have a cinch or rope. He just held on the fur of
the calf. When daddy and Morrice released the calf, it began to run toward the creek, bucking
some. When it reached the creek, it planted its heels and stopped. Truesdell flew over its head
and landed in the mud on the other side of the creek. Daddy said that seemed to satisfy
Truesdell's desire to be a bull rider. Truesdell may have wanted to test his skills because his
father had been a cowboy."
Truesdell graduated from Wann, Nowata Co, High School in 1926 and moved the same year with
his family to Bartlesville. He attended the Bartlesville Business School for two years then worked
for a short time in the mailing department of the Examiner Enterprise Newspaper. On 21 Jan
1929 he went to work in the office of the Dewey Portland Cement Co, initially as a stenographer.
Eventually, he became the chief clerk and office manager.
Truesdell and Ruby were married 18 May 1934 at the home of the pastor of the First
Presbyterian Church and started their married life in Dewey, OK. in 1934. Don Tyler, General
Manager of the cement plant gave them a house on the south edge of Dewey rent free for a year
as a wedding present. The address is thought to be 116 S. Wyandotte Ave. In the 1940 US
Federal Census, they are living at 1225 North Choctaw which was near the cement plant, and
own their home valued at $1500. They were also living in the same home in 1935 and it is likely
that they had recently moved there from their "free" house. Truesdell is listed as having been
born in KS and having completed one year of college. He is listed as Chief Office Clerk in a
cement plant, working a 40 hour week, working 52 weeks in 1939, earning $2000 per month.
Ruby is listed as having completed 8 years of school and in Home Housework.
Generation 6 (cont.)
It was about Feb 1941 (when Maridell was nine months ole) that they moved to the Tuxedo
community between Dewey and Bartlesville, This was 10 acres with a house owned by his
parents which had the address of Rt 1 Box 301. When they moved there they added running
water and a bathroom. They purchased the property 6 Nov 1942 for about $2250.00, the
address eventually becoming 710 NE Washington Blvd. On 16 Jul 1947 they sold the house and
3 acres to P. W. and Ruby Tate. Prior to selling the house they had build a small 2 BR cinder
block house on 2 acres (now 3916 NE Wisconsin St) behind the main house where they lived for
two years while a house was being build on the remaining 5 acres. They moved into the new
house and assumed a mortgage of $11,488.00 on 8 Apr 1949. The address for this new home
became 746 NE Washington Blvd (Hwy US 75). On 14 Jul 50 they rented then sold the block
house and 2 acres to Glenn and Nancy Blair for $5500. On 18 Sep 1958 they sold the house to
Ernest and Maud Tannehill when Trues was transfered to the new cement plant in NE Tulsa and
where he was working at the time of his death. They purchased a new construction home at
11404 E. 4th Place in a new subdivision in northeast Tulsa.
Because of his age, job and family he was low on the priority list to serve in WWII. However, at
the time the war ended, he had been scheduled to take his physical for induction and would have
been called up had the war not ended when it did.
Trues was a quiet spoken, kind and generous man. Occasionally a worker from the Dewey
cement plant would come to the house to ask for a loan of money to last until payday. (The first
black person I ever remember seeing was a man who came to our door for assistance) No one
was ever turned away and he was always repaid. He was a devout Christian and a student of
the Bible all his adult life and gave a minimum of 10 percent of his income to the church. He
was a founding member of the Eastside Church of the Nazarene in Bartlesville, eventually
transferring (probably about 1951) to the Dewey Church of the Nazarene. After moving to Tulsa,
they attended First Church of the Nazarene until his death. He was always active in the church
as Sunday school superintendent, church treasurer, adult Sunday school teacher, and song
leader/choir director, all positions which he held for many years. He had a good singing voice
and frequently sang solos and duets with his daughter. His only vanity that I can remember was
his hair; He tried many different hair products over the years to prevent baldness. Although his
hair was thin, he was successful in preventing baldness.
He loved to fish, and played tennis in his younger years. He was not handy and had no ability fix
things although he made outdoor concrete benches and ornamental items later in life. In early
March 1964 at age 55, while at work he experienced chest pain, saw the doctor but was not
hospitalized until the next morning when he was taken by ambulance to the hospital. After his
heart attack he eventually returned to work part-time but never fully recovered. He was
hospitalized a second time with congestive heart failure in September. He died at the age of 56
of complications following his initial heart attack in March.
Notes for Ruby L Cunningham:
In the 1910 US Federal Census, Ruby is a 3 yr old living with her parents and younger brother in
Cottonwood Precinct, Yavapai Co, AZ. Her father is listed as being a farmer on a truck farm on
his own account, and renting his farm. Her parents had three children, the oldest having died.
Yavapai Co is where her father had been born and where his uncle had a ranch.
The family had moved to AZ for her father's health. She had a great fear of water as she almost
drowned when she fell into a canal behind the house where they were living. Her father died of
TB when she was 6 years old. By this time the family had moved back to Cedar Co, MO. At the
time of her father's death, her mother was 8 months pregnant and moved back with her own
mother to have the baby. They continued to live with her grandmother while her mother worked
in a nearby country store (Pacetown). Ruby felt she never really had a childhood since she was
essentially responsible from an early age for raising her two younger brothers while her mother
worked at the store. She remembers standing on a wooden box at the sink washing dishes.
When she was about 12 to 14 years old she contracted flu and almost died during the dreaded
1918 Spanish Influenza Epidemic which killed millions of people worldwide. Because her father,
paternal grandparents and other close relatives died of TB, she was always very careful to
maintain good hygiene within her own family. Although she never tested positive for TB, it was
Generation 6 (cont.)
always one of her greatest fears.
In the 1920 US Federal Census, the family is still living with Ruby's grandmother although her
mother is listed as head of household and as working as a store clerk. Only the youngest
brother is listed as attending school. Ruby (13 yrs old) and Newell (11 yrs old) are not in school.
The children in this community attended a one room school (Sand Ridge, which is still standing)
which was first through eighth grades. After eighth grade children had to move into town and
stay with relatives to complete their schooling, which the family could not afford to do. Thus,
Ruby only received an 8th grade education (which is probably equivalent to a 12th grade
education by today's standards). She was excellent in math and spelling.
In about 1924 when she was about 18 yrs old, she moved to Bartlesville, OK where she had
family living. She soon got a job with a family who was employed as an executive with Phillips
66 Petroleum Company. She was a live-in house keeper and took care of their two young boys.
The address was 1112 S. Johnstone Ave. She worked there for about 10 years until her
marriage. In the 1930 US Federal Census she is listed in their household as a "Servant". In the
1940 US Federal Census she is married and living in Dewey with her husband and 4 yr old
Forrest. Maridell is not listed in the census since she was born about a month after the census
was taken. The family is living at 1225 N. Choctaw which they own and where they were also
living in 1935.
Ruby was a product of a poor, single parent family as well as the depression which was reflected
in everything she did for the rest of her life. She was frugal, hard working, and an excellent
money manager. She was fiercely loyal and dedicated to her family, After they moved to the
Tuxedo community in 1941 on ten acres belonging to her inlaws, she kept a large garden,
canned, raised chickens for food and eggs, made butter, and raised caves to butcher for food.
This was especially the case during and immediately following WWII.
After her daughter started first grade she went to work as a cafeteria worker in the same school,
and was quickly promoted to supervisor. The 1956 Tuxedo City Directory lists her a cook at the
Highland Pk School. Even after moving into their newly built house in 1949, she continued to
raise chickens for food, and sold eggs, but her main cash crop was pigs. She would buy piglets
in the fall, take home cafeteria garbage to feed them and sell the adult pigs the next spring.
(This was on five acres in the country.) She did this for a number of years.
After her husband was transferred to Tulsa in 1959 she stayed active, providing child day care
for several families up to the time of her death. She attended First Church of the Nazarene until
her husband's death, when she then became a member of the Central Church of the Nazarene.
In 1979 she moved to University Village in Tulsa, a retirement community, living in an
independent efficiency apartment until her death in 1985. She died in the hospital as a result of
complications following surgery for a ruptured aortic aneurysm.
Forrest Truesdell "Trues" Cunningham and Ruby L Cunningham had the following children:

Bob worked as a financial planner. While in Japan from 1984-87, Bob taught
professional writing courses for members of the USAF and civilians. He was also
employed as the Testing Officer for the USAF Education Center. He also taught
English at a local Misawa English Language School. While in Japan he applied
for graduate school of the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. Upon
Maridell's assignment back to CO, Bob embarked on an intensive 22 month, 61
semester hour graduate program in Counseling and Human Services, graduating
May 1989. Maridell was reassigned to Andrews AFB, MD and Bob was employed
as Mental Health Counselor at the St. Mary's Co, MD County Health Department
Mental Health Services, Leonardtown, MD until 1994. Subsequent to the move to
our retirement home in Pickens, SC in 1994, Bob was employed as a Mental
Health Counselor, Greenville Mental Health Center, Greenville, SC until he retired
in 2003. After this "final" retirement, Bob devoted much of his time to the church.
He enjoyed his work with Pastoral Care, Worship Ministry, and assisting our local
Parish grow. He also enjoyed traveling at any opportunity and cutting grass with
his large John Deer tractor on our 54 acres. Bob had a heart attack at home and
died 7 Apr 2012.
Bob had an inquiring mind, loved educational pursuits, could fix almost anything,
loved to build/refinish furniture, but most of all loved his family especially his two
grandsons, Jeremy and Andrew.

80. ii. LIVING CUNNINGHAM JR. He married LIVING HOWARD.
68. HARRY HOWARD6 CUNNINGHAM (Henrietta "Etta"5 Arnn, Edward McBride4 Arnn, Abihu3 Arnn,
George Washington2 Aaron, Abraham1 Aaron) was born on 10 Apr 1911 in Greer Farm, Nowata
Co, OK. He died on 18 Mar 1996 in San Bernardino, San Bernardino Co., CA. He married
Thelma Goldie Rouintree, daughter of Harvey Leander Rouintree and Margaret "Peggy" Alva
Baty, on 14 Apr 1935 in Nowata, Nowata Co, OK. She was born on 22 Aug 1907 in Cull, Howell
Co, MO. She died on 10 Apr 1989 in Chino, San Bernardino Co, CA.
Notes for Harry Howard Cunningham:
See notes for Howard's parents for a description of his early life. Howard wrote the following
about his memories of his life.
"My parents were Edward Payson and Henrietta Arnn Cunningham. I was born April 10, 1911 at
which time my parents with my two brothers, Perry and Truesdell, were living on a farm between
Wann, Okla and Coffeyvile, Kansas. Coffeyville was our big town. Latter the family moved to
Wann into a box car house, Dad took on odd jobs. How we had another brother Warden
"Wamp". One recollection here was when my parents disciplined me sharply and I ran away
from home into the corn fields and they had to search for me. It was no easy matter to find such
a small boy in a field of tall corn. Another time I recall falling asleep in church at night and my
parents forgot me and left me in the little dark church. They missed me on their way home and
turned back to get me. I had awakened, climbed out a window and started to walk home when
they met me. . . One time I hoed corn and made money to help pay for train tickets and went with
my Mom to visit my Grandma and other relatives in Arkansas. That was a very special event. . .
I worked during summer vacations for the farmers, worked in the hay fields and other farmer's
helper jobs. One time I was driving a team of horses for the big hay rake and raked right through
a bumble bee's nest. What a swarm of bees! I jumped off the hay rake and ran as fast as I
could and the farmer came to my rescue and drove the team out of the swarm of bumble bees. I
also helped the farmers feed and care for the live stock. . . Another time I had a job of riding one
horse and leading a mare to another farm, a distance of some miles, for breeding. I saw a pump,
I was thirsty and stopped my horse to get a drink. The mare got away from us and I had to run
to catch her. It was pretty exciting. . . I heard radio my first time with head phones at a friend's
house. Looking back today I feel I was given lots of responsibility for such a young boy. . . . I
finished 8th grade school at Wann, and this was the end of my happy and productive farm life
and work."
After the family moved near Bartlesville living on the dairy farm in 1926, Howard helped out on
the dairy farm and entered high school besides. After moving into Bartlesville a year later he
worked at the Morning Examiner newspaper. "I worked part time at the Examiner, finishing the
9th grade. You may have guessed by now that I liked working more than school." In the 1930
US Federal Census Howard is 18 years of age working as a printer in a printing office, " My part
time with the newspaper became a full time apprenticeship and correspondence studies with
International Typographical Union."
"Our Social activities were mostly centered around our church where we devoutly attended and
worshiped. I met Thelma there, and we were married in 1935. . . I was now a husband and we
were in our own home. In 1938 our first son, Ross was born and now we were a family. A year
later, because I had completed my newspaper apprenticeship, we left Bartlesville. First we went
to New York to enroll in a finish course in I.T.U. School. We had saved some money and
purchased a new Ford Sedan. With our year old son we traveled across country east to west.
Our goal was to find the right location and the best job opportunity. We made several temporary
stops, with temporary apartment lodging, always as near a park as possible, or with a yard for
our son to play. I worked in several newspapers - New York Daily News, Washington Star, St.
Louis Post Dispatch, Philadelphia, Corpus Christi and others, gaining experience and paying
expenses. This was an interesting and memorable experience for me. Our travels ended in Los
Generation 6 (cont.)
Angeles. I enrolled in Frank Wiggins Trade School for more training and worked part time at the
Morning Examiner. I also went to Aircraft Training School to prepare for war-time employment.
Then I worked at Douglas Aircraft for a few years."
"We established our home in Venice, Cal where we lived for the next ten years, and where our
next two sons, Gary and Dean, were born. We bought our first home, which was a terrific old 2
story house, where we enjoyed a good life with our three little boys. Previous to this I had
accepted a Government Printing assignment. We soon knew that life wasn't what we wanted
and were glad to return to Venice a year later to stay. I was now successful in getting into the
Offset Printing Trade. First there was Addressograph Multigraph, then Page Lithograph, and
finally the City of Los Angeles Printing, each time a better experience."
"With our three growing sons we now considered a change in location for their better
advantages. We were now able to sell the Venice home for a nice profit and buy a new home in
Whitter near the orange groves." According to Ross they moved to Whittier in 1955. "There was
more space everywhere for the boys. Schools were good. Dean completed Grades 7 and 8 in
the new Katherine Edwards School just back of our place. Ross and Gary graduated from
Whittier High and Dean from the new Pioneer High."
"God has been so gracious to our family, and for His blessings we are continually thankful. Our
love and prayers are for the family we were blessed with. We pray that their homes and lives will
be blessed with Happiness, Health, Love, Joy and Peace; most of all that they may know God
and His Love, Christ the Saviour and Hope of Everlasting Life, and that they may seek Divine
direction as their children grow up through happy childhood to become strong men and women,
taking their places in God's world."
In the 1940 US Federal Census Howard was living with his young family at 33251/2 Baldwin
Street, Los Angeles and renting their home for $20 per month, and had been living in Bartlesville
is 1935. Howard is listed as unemployed and there is no occupation or income listed. Thelma is
employed as a stenographer for a wholesale cracker company but an income is not listed.
Notes for Thelma Goldie Rouintree:
Thelma Goldie was the fourth girl to be born to the Rouintree family and was the runt of the
family. The birthday of this small but mighty girl was Aug 22, 1907. She had brownish hair that
curled in ringlets over her head. Thelma loved church and liked to perform in Sunday School
programs at the little Presbyterian Church of Elk Creek where the family worshiped. She
remembered her Papa carrying her piggy-back across the fields to church as they walked with
the family. Papa and Mama were very special to Thelma: fishing with her Papa at Whitworth
pond after the day's work was done was a special treat. Wearing the pretty dresses that her
Mama made for her and all her other sisters was very special too. The stories that her Mama
told meant a great deal to her and would be handed down to her coming generations.
Thelma's childhood was a very active one. She had good times with the family: picnics at the
creek, playing ball and other games in the "woods" play area out in front of the farm house.
Games that she excelled in were jumping rope, making doll clothes, having mud pie parties and
making play houses. Her very best childhood friend was Ruth King. They went to school and
Sunday School together and enjoyed all the other childhood happiness. A special post office
was created by these two friends under an old oak tree half way between their two homes which
was just down one hill and up another. There were other childhood friends but Ruth was special
to her. School was always easy for Thelma and she liked it. Being good in reading gained her
promotion in three years. (Skipping these grades would make her a very young and little
freshman coming into high school.) Mathematics and Spelling were her best subjects and she
dared to stand up in "ciphering matches or spelling bees" on Fridays with upper class students
when she was in the earlier grades.
The family moved in West Plains in her Junior year of high school and she graduated from West
Plains High School as would the rest of her brothers and sisters coming after her. Later she was
able to attend Springfield Business College with her Papa helping her borrow money for entrance
and her working for room and board. Very early in life the realization that her parents worked
hard for her made her wish she could grow up and do something to help them, like buying a
Generation 6 (cont.)
pretty house up on a hill which the family could see on their drive into West Plains from Elk
Creek. Her first job was seven dollars a week in a Realtor office. At only seventeen years of age
and young looking for that, she was glad to have a job. she kept her eye out for betterment and
kept moving up into better paying jobs. Her final move came in 1929 in Bartlesville, OK where
she became secretary in the Phillips Petroleum Company offices. She grieved "buckets of tears"
when she left home to go to Oklahoma for her better job. She loved home! She wanted to help
her younger brothers and sisters to have a little more financial ease and to keep helping her
parents as much as possible. She helped the others mostly with their clothes budgets through
high school and college. Each of them managed somehow to provide the funds for their actual
tuition. Then there was the first family car, a Model T Ford that she bought; it made history long
after she had gone from home. The family did not demand a lot of earthly goods nor was there
enough money to provide them. They had the necessities of life, a good Christian home, parents
who loved them, and brothers and sisters to make life interesting at home.
When she met her husband-to-be, Howard Cunningham in a Bartlesville church, he was almost
engaged to someone else and she didn't try to compete. Finally that other girl moved away and
Howard was free to choose from a few girls who were hoping for his attention. He was the local
best catch and he chose Thelma and she fell for him. She was a happy oil company secretary
and enjoyed her free life and wasn't eager to give it up, but her real love was Howard. She
compromised by getting married 14 Apr 1935 and continuing to work three more years, until their
first son Ross was born.
Howard Cunningham was born 10 Apr 1911 and spent his early years in the country on a farm
near Wann, OK, the third son of four. His brothers were Perry, Truesdell and Warden. His father
Edward Payson was Scots-Irish, and his mother Henrietta was of German-Irish descent. His
growing up years were mostly in the country where he had the fields, orchards, the old swimming
hole and the hay barn for recreation. The Cunninghams were a Christian family, loyal to God
and Church. They moved up to Bartlesville for better employment and schools when Howard
was a freshman in high school. He preferred work to school however. He had helped do
janitor's work when just a kid and before be finished his sophomore year of high school, had a
job. It was with the newspaper "Morning Examiner" where his Dad also worked as a route man
driving the trucks of newspapers to other towns. Howard was a mailer, but soon became a 6-
year apprentice to learn the printing trade. During this time he completed by correspondence
and with a diploma, an extensive I.T.U. Printing Course. This led into many other printing jobs.
Howard and Thelma moved to CA in 1940, a year after Ross was born. The war was on and
Howard got into the defense industry, still using his printing skills. In 1941 war was declared with
Japan, and second son Gary was born that year. Howard took a government printing
assignment in Washington D.C. for nine months during the war. They disliked the eastern coast
and went back to CA to live. Two brothers, James, US Air Force and Lyman, US Navy enlisted.
In time, they were both in training in CA and were able to be near the Cunninghams. Mother
Rouintree came to CA to get a job and be near her sons. Thelma helped and encouraged her
Mother in her first paying job. Mother Rouintree worked at ironing mostly service men's shirts at
a big laundry in Venice. Dad Rouintree came to CA to get a defense job and they both settled in
an apartment and were there through the time the boys were on the west coast. Thelma's sisters
Florence and Ruth and Ruth's husband Floyd also lived in and around Venice. Mary Lee,
Lyman's wife had also come to CA to be near her husband. It was a special time of living close
for all of them. Ruth and Floyd had a small daughter Joella, Mary Lee and Lyman had a little boy
Ronnie and the Cunninghams had their third son, Dean who was born in Feb 1946, soon after
the war ended.
The town of Venice, CA that the Cunninghams, Rouintrees, Wardens, Mary Lee and Florence
lived in was an old beach town, with many attractions, the best of which was the beach and surf.
Venice formerly was a city of its own, with canals patterned after Venice, Italy, Some of those
canals remained down through the years although Venice developed into a modern city of
apartments and marinas. The Cunninghams bought their first home in Venice, CA and when
Dean was ready for Kindergarten, Thelma's second career began. She accepted a position with
the Los Angeles City Schools. During those years the family thrived on fun with each other and
friends. The boys learned to swim in the breakwater, while active in the Boy Scouts and in
Generation 6 (cont.)
church activities. They camped in the mountains where they built their own cabin together with
Lyman (Thelma's brother) and his sons in Green Valley. The boys built their own boat for the
lake, and they learned to ski. The families of Thelma, Lyman and Florence had very special
times together at Green Valley.
Ross, the oldest son of the Cunninghams, attended Los Angeles City College earning his degree
in Civil Engineering. His first job after graduation was with Los Angeles City Harbor Division
where he was totally happy to be working outside. He was later transferred to the City
Department of Water and Power and while there he earned his license for a surveyor. Gary,
second son applied for NROTC scholarship upon graduation from high school. He attended
Idaho State university, majoring in engineering and business. Upon graduation, he was
commissioned a Lt in the Marine Corp and went for officers training. Later he flew helicopters to
pick up the wounded during the Vietnam war. Two years after returning home from Vietnam he
went into commercial flying for Delta Airlines. Dean attended Los Angeles College and enlisted
in the US Marines. After this tour in the service he went to Fresno State to complete his college,
majoring in Psychology. He returned to military service in the USAF for officers training where he
completed work in communication.
Thelma and Howard are both retired, Thelma after twenty three years with the Los Angeles
school system. They still work on the cabin and their home is now in Whittier, CA. They enjoy
traveling in their trailer and flying in Delta's jets with special rates and free flights provided by son
Gary. To their children and grandchildren, they would like to bequeath the Christian heritages
handed down to them by their parents, their love, and good name and integrity, rather than the
riches on earth.
