Descendants of Nicolas Fain

					Generation 1
1. NICHOLAS1 FAIN was born about 1730 in Ireland. He died about 1783 in Knob Creek, Washington
Co., NC now TN. He married Elizabeth Taylor about 1752 in England. She was born about 1734
in England. She died about 1795 in Jonesboro, Washington Co, TN.
Notes for Nicholas Fain:
There are a number of books and other publications written about the early Fains, including
Nicholas Fain of Tennessee by Max Fain (1980), The Fain Family History by William J. Fain, and
Ebenezer Fain: Southern Appalachian Pioneer by Travis H. McDaniel (1996).
These books tell the story of a French Huguenot family by the name of Fainyance, fleeing to
Ireland in about 1685 during the inquisitions and persecution period in France. In about 1730, a
descendant of that family, Nicholas Fain was born in Ireland. As a young man in his early 20's
he married Elizabeth Taylor, who was born in England, sometime around 1752. They emigrated
to America shortly after that and settled in the township of New Garden, which was in Chester
County, PA. This area was about 15 miles to the northwest of Wilmington, DE and 30 miles west
of Philadelphia.
Tax records from Chester Co indicate that Nicholas owes tax there in 1754/56/57/58 and is
shown as owning two "cowes" and owes no tax in 1764. He is shown owing various amounts in
various years through 1766, after which he is no longer shown. There is no evidence that he
owned land in Chester Co. All their children were born there during that time, with the possible
exception of their first child, Samuel, who is thought to have been born 20 Jan 1753 before they
left Ireland. In early 1766 Nicholas applied for and received a license to travel as a peddler. A
remarkable church record found by earlier researchers helps to document Nicholas' movements
in VA. Records from the Linville Creek Baptist Church in current day Rockingham Co, VA
document that on the second Sunday in April of 1766 "Nicholas Fain was received in transient
communion". Linville, VA is in the Shenandoah Valley. The community was located on the main
travel route of that time, which lead from the PA border southwestward down to VA and on into
NC. This chance record serves to document one of his traveling peddler trips to the south, or it
could indicate the actual time frame when the family was on the move to the new frontier lands
where they next settled. This new area was just north of the Watauga settlements and was in
the Wolf Hills near present day Abingdon, VA. By this time Nicholas and Elizabeth's family was
complete. They had eight children, all boys except for the last child, a girl who had made the trip
down the Shenandoah Valley as a baby.
As the settlers grew in number, so did the conflicts with the Cherokee. By 1770, settlers had
established themselves in the fertile valleys of the upper TN River watershed. Settlements
clustered in the valleys of the Holston, Watauga and Nolichucky Rivers. It was in this time period
and to this area that Nicholas Fain brought his wife and eight children. The first land records of
Nicholas in this area show him purchasing, on 20 Jan 1774, 230 acres on the Wolf Hills Creek
branch of the Middle Fork (some records say South Fork) of the Holston Riven in Fincastle Co,
VA. His 19 year old son John purchased 30 acres in the same area in 28 Feb, 1774. Later in
1776, Fincastle was divided and the area where the Fains were located became Washington Co,
VA. A report states that Nicholas lived on Knob Creek within sight of the point where Knob
Creek flowed in to the Watagua River. He had a two story house made of sawed logs. It is likely
that this house was built after he had been in the area for some time.
Attacks on whites west of the mountains increased as the Shawnee tried to hold the white
settlers back. By mid-1774 murder and pillage on both sides were taking place. Attacks even
reached into Fincastle Co, home of the Fains. The English Governor Dunmore of VA called for
an all out campaign against the Shawnee towns on the Ohio. Capt Evan Shelby raised a small
company of men from the Holston and Watauga settlements for this campaign. Included were
Nicholas' oldest son, 21 year old Samuel and his bother, 19 year old John. Several militia forces
joined together and marched down the Kenawha River to its junction with the Ohio at Point
Pleasant where they met Chief Cornstalk and his warriors on 10 Oct 1774. After they retreated
and were later surrounded, the Shawnee sued for peace. This was called "Lord Dunmore's War"
or the Battle of Point Pleasant.
Generation 1 (cont.)
According to son Ebenezer's pension application he (and his family) were living in Washington
Co, VA when he first entered service in the Revolutionary War in 1776 at the age of 14 years.
He stated that he moved to Washington Co, NC (now TN) in 1778. Nicholas was a private in the
Revolution and was engaged in the Oct 1780 battle of King's Mountain, SC. Several of
Nicholas's other sons were also at King's Mountain which was the turning point of the American
Revolution. Most of the early lists of participants include Samuel and Nicholas. The latest list
published by historians of the King's Mountain Military Park include Ebenezer, John and Samuel.
Family tradition claims that Nicholas and five of his sons and his son-in-law were there. It is
probable that they were all involved in the campaign in some way, if not in the actual battle.
There seems little doubt that Samuel was there. Some reports indicate that Ebenezer and John
were wounded, John with a superficial wound from a bullet which ricocheted from a tree.
According to Ebenezer's Rev. War pension application, he engaged the enemy at King's
Mountain and received a wound in the leg. He also states that he moved to Washington Co, NC,
now TN in the year 1778 (he would have been 16 yrs old). It is most likely that he moved to
Washington Co, NC/TN with his family.
Nicholas was noted for his religious zeal. Religion was his great absorbing thought. In Ireland,
he belonged to the High Church of England. In this country he was Baptist. His descendants
were mostly Presbyterians. After entertaining travelers who desired to lodge for the night, he
would always talk to them on the subject of religion as he would to his own children.
It is thought that Nicholas died at his home on Knob Creek near Jonesboro, Washington Co, TN.
A marker has been placed in Reed Cemetery, Johnson City, Washington Co, TN. On it is listed
Nicholas Fain, NC Militia Private, Birth, 1730, Ireland; Death, 12 Sep 1785. Also on the marker is
Elizabeth Taylor, Birth, c 1732; Death, c 1795. Also listed on the marker are all the Fain children.
It is thought that Elizabeth died in Jonesboro.

Notes for Samuel Fain:
(See narrative for Nicholas for details of Samuel's early life.)
Some researchers say that Samuel was probably born in Ireland and came with his parents to
American when a very small child. Other researchers have him born in Chester Co, PA where
he first lived with his family. In 1774 Samuel at the age of 21 years old fought in the Battle of
Point Pleasant. He married Rosannah McMahon 16 Jun 1777 apparently in Washington Co,
NC(TN). It appears that his family moved to Washington Co, NC (later TN) in 1778 according to
Ebenezer's pension application. So he may have moved to TN in advance of his family, at or
before his marriage. It appears that his father-in-law, John McMahon moved with his family to
the Washington Co, NC(TN) area about 1774. In Nov 1777 the NC general assembly formed
Washington Military District into Washington Co. A land office was opened in the county with
permission for each head of a family to take up 640 acres for himself, 100 acres for his wife, and
100 acres for each child. Samuel Fain began entry to lands north and west of the McMahon
lands, over the ridge from Sycamore Shoals and on the northwest edge of present-day Johnson
City, TN. The first courts of Washington Co, NC met in Feb 1778. John McMahon was chosen
as the first county register. On Apr 10 1778 John Fain, the first child of Samuel and Rosannah
was born. On Aug 26 1778 a tax list was prepared for the county collectors. It shows that
Samuel Fain had property assessed at 157 pounds -16, taxed at 1-12-5.
A controversy arose between the Watauga settlers (now Elizabethion, Carter Co) and the
Nolichucky settlers (now Greenville, Greene Co) over the location of a county seat. They
compromised. A new community would be established at a good fresh-water supply between the
two. The town of Jonesboro was chartered in 1779. It fell right in the middle of the community of
the Fains and the McMahons and other families tied to them. For once in their lives, the Fain
boys had got there first.
On May 25, 1780 his father-in- law, John B. McMahon was appointed a constable. Then the
Revolutionary War reached TN. Samuel fought as a militia private in the Rev. War and
engaged in the battle of King's Mountain, SC in Oct 1780. According to the North Carolina
(Revolutionary War) Land Grants, Roll 14, Book 4, he was awarded 640 acres at 50 shillings per
100 acres on 30 Oct 1782.
In his last years Samuel turned to the church for the support and welfare of himself and his
family. In 1790 the Hebron Church was organized four miles east of Jonesboro. An important
role in the formation of the church was played by the McMahon, Mitchell and Fain families.
These three families formed the germ of the church and worked to advance Presbyterianism in
their vicinity. An election of ruling elders was held in the home of Samuel at the time the church
was formed. The first elders were Adam Mitchell Sr., John B. McMahon, and Samuel Fain. They
were ordained soon after this election. Until a church was built, the congregation often met in the
homes of the elders, and the elders bore a good share of the cost of the first church building.
The death of Elder Fain in 1794 and the removal of Elder McMahon in Kentucky soon afterward
greatly weakened the church. This church was later absorbed into the Presbyterian Church in
Jonesboro.
Generation 2 (cont.)
Samuel owned a total of 1040 acres of land. He died before Apr 1794 without leaving a will, and
leaving 7 children ages 16 years to 4 years, and there is no mention of his wife although it is
thought she died in 1798. The first mention of his death is the inventory: "April the 2nd 1794
Western Territory Washington County. A true Inventory of the moveable property of Samuel Fain
Deceased." At the Washington Co Court of Pleas session on May 26, 1794 four judges,
including Thomas Gillespie, ordered "that John Blair McMahon, Adam Mitchell and William Fain
have leave of administration on the estate of Samuel Fain dec'd and have given Alexander
Mathers and Joseph Young their securities in the sum of twelve hundred dollars." At the
Washington Co Court of Pleas session on Aug 25, 1794 and inventory of the sale of the estate of
Samuel Fain deceased returned by William Fain, Adam Mitchell and John Blair McMahan
administrators. The Inventory is recorded on page 75 of the "Estate Book". It was filed at the
May session, 1794. The sale was recorded on pages 78 through 85 and was filed at the August
session, 1794. The estate is remarkable for several reasons. One is the number and position of
persons who purchased items. This is either a reflection on the quality of the man or the quality
of his property - or both. Another is the number of bee hives and a nursery of apple trees.
Samuel must have spent a good deal of time searching for bee trees and cutting them down.
Even more remarkable is the number of books, including several dictionaries. But perhaps the
best indicator of the quality of the man was the fact that his children bought most of the books.
(Editor's note: Given their young ages, it is unlikely that the children themselves bought the
books.) Sometime after 1796 John Blair McMahon moved to KY, leaving William Fain (brother)
and Adam Mitchell as the two administrators of the estate. Probably the family continued to live
on the farm for some time. Tax records continue to carry the "heirs of Samuel Fain" through
1814.
The public sale of their home must have been a traumatic experience for the orphans of Samuel.
What were their thoughts as neighbors and strangers stripped their home of all the animals,
tools, harvests and furnishings. Did John (the oldes sont) feel that he was old enough and
capable of continuing his father's work on the farm? By the end of the day the children were left
with nothing but the land, the money, and such few personal things as they themselves had
bought. There were many relatives close by to care for the orphans. There was no move made
to appoint guardians for them. Most probably the children fell under the care of their
grandmother, Elizabeth Taylor Fain, and of their uncle, William Fain of Jonesboro.
The bulk of the information for this narrative came from "Nicholas Fain of Tennessee" by Max
Fain.
A marker has been placed in the Reed Cemetery, Knob Creek community, Johnson City,

Notes for William Fain:
Because William died at such a young age of unknown causes, not much is known about him
other than he was born in Washington Co, TN and "died young". He was the third child and
second son of Samuel and Rosannah and was 12 years old when his father died.
It appears that he was married in Washington Co, and had two young children when he died
either in TN or KY. Sally's father died in Washington Co, but her mother is thought to have died
in KY so it is not known at what point the young family moved to KY. Sally remarried a Goodson
in KY but there were also Goodsons in Washington Co, TN. According to later census records,
his son, George was born in TN about 1806. Sally would have been about 15 years old when her
son was born and William about 23 years old. Later census records in put Martha in MO and
indicate that she also was born in TN. According to marriage records, his wife Sarah "Sally"
remarried in Cumberland Co, KY in 1811. George would have been about 5 years old and
Martha about two years old. It is possible that William and his young family had migrated to KY
as had other families from the area where he grew up. William died as a young man - probably
in his late 20's. The only record we have so far is a Washington Co, TN deed that mentions his
wife, two children and her remarriage. Information from the deed is as follows:
WASHINGTON CO. TN LAND RECORDS Part 4 of 6 DEEDS, Books 17 and 18 18-215; 8 Aug
1826, from Josiah and wife Sally Goodson, formerly Sally Fain, Widow of Wm, Fain, decd, and
George W. Fain, son and one of heirs of William Fain, decd, all of Cumberland Co, KY to Joseph
Bowman; NC patent 393, 13 Oct 1783 granted to Samuel Fain intestate 441 acres (rest was sold
earlier) to John Fain, above-named William Fain, Nicholas Fain, and Samuel fain, all sons of
Samuel Fain Senr., each recd 1/4 part; bounded...Duncan's line, top of ridge; said Sally Goodson
after death of her former husband William Fain married Josiah Goodson who was appointed
guardian of George W. Fain and Martha Fain, then minor heirs of Wm. Fain, land sold to Joseph
Bowman for $600, title bond dated 3 Apr 1817. Wit. George Crouch, D. Kinney, S. Crawford.
(Sally's mother was a Crouch which is the last name of one of the witnesses.)
There is a fair amount of information on her second husband, Josiah Goodson. It appears that
he and his family were living in Isle of Wight Co, VA in Dec 1794 where he is named in his
father's will. He is listed in the War of 1812 Service Records as a Sergeant in the 3 Reg't
(Boykins's) Virginia Militia (although he was married in KY the year before.) He is first listed in
the 1820 US Federal Census as living in Paoli Township, Cumberland Co, KY. There are 3 white
males under 10, one white male 10 thru 15 (probably George), one white male 26-44 (Josiah),
one white female under 10, one free white female 10-15 (probably Martha), one free white
female 26-44 (Sally), one person engaged in Agriculture and one slave male under 14, so it
appears that Sally had 4 children with Josiah by this census. There were also Nolands (Sally's
maiden name) in this county, as well as other Goodsons.
The family is listed in the 1830 US Federal Census as living south of Cumberland River,
Cumberland Co, KY. and again there are Nolands and Goodsons nearby. There is a total of 10
white persons in the household and 2 slaves. It is possible that with 2 children under 5 that they
may be grandchildren.
It appears that the Goodsons came to Polk Co, MO with George W. Fain and his family in about
1838, It is likely that Martha came as well as she appears to have been single, She was married
in Jul 1840 at the age of 31 and there is no indication that she had been married previously.
Public lands in Polk Co were opened in the fall of 1837 and Josiah is listed in the 1838 land
entries in Township 25, Range 24 in the History of Polk Co, Mo, published by Goodspeed in
1889. John N. Goodson is listed in the same History as having a land entry in 1840. It is likely
that both families came to this area to take advantage of opportunity for new lands. In the 1840
US Federal Census they are living in Polk Co. There is a total of 8 persons in the household and
no slaves, with 3 persons employed in agriculture. Josiah bought 160 acres of land in Polk Co in
Apr 1843 and in Sep 1844 he bought an additional 80 acres.
In the 1850 US Federal Census they are living in District 71, Polk Co with 2 of their sons and are
all farming. In the 1860 US Federal Census they are in Johnson Twp, Polk Co, with Humansville
as their post office, and Josiah is still farming with a personal estate of $500.00. The children
Generation 3 (cont.)
have all moved away. They are not found in the 1870 US Federal Census. There are Goodsons
listed in the Cemetery Directory of Polk Co, in the Humansville cemetery but Sarah and Josiah
are not listed. At this point it is not known when they died or where they are buried.

					Generation 4
16. GEORGE WASHINGTON4 FAIN (William3, Samuel2, Nicholas1) was born about 1806 in Washington
Co, TN. He died before 1880 in MO. He married Susan Smith about 1828 in ? Cumberland Co,
KY. She was born about 1805 in KY. She died before 1860 in MO.
Notes for George Washington Fain:
Not a great deal is known about George other than he was born in TN (probably Washington Co)
and his father, William died when he was a small boy. He would have been about 5 years old
when his mother married Josiah Goodson in Cumberland Co, KY in 1811. He and his sister,
Martha were raised in Cumberland Co, KY which is probably where he married Susan Smith. He
is first mentioned in a Washington Co, TN deed when property was sold in Apr 1817 when he
would have been about 11 years old. (See narrative for William for a complete description.)
In the 1820 US Federal Census he is in the Josiah Goodson household in Paoli Twp,
Cumberland Co, KY probably in the free white males 10-15 category. He would have been about
14 years of age. I have been unable to locate him in the 1830 US Federal Census although he
would have been married by the time of this census. According to the history of Polk Co, MO
published by Goodspeed in 1889, the records of the US Land Office at Springfield show that
government lands in Polk Co were first opened to entry in the fall of 1837. In this history George
W. Fain and Josiah Goodson made land entries in Township 35, Range 24 in 1838. John N.
Goodson is listed in the same Twp and Range in 1840. It seems likely that the Fains and
Goodsons learned of the lands being opened in MO and arrived about 1838 to take advantage of
this new opportunity.
In the 1840 US Federal Census they are living in Polk Cc, MO. There are 7 persons listed in the
household, 2 males 5-9 (probably Wm Marion and John), 1 male 30-39 (George), 1 female under
5 (probably Matilda), 2 females 10-14 (probably Martha and Carrie). It does not appear that
Harriet, who was born about 1839 in MO is listed. One person is employed in agriculture
(George). The Goodsons are living nearby in Polk Co in the same census. Sometime between
1840 and 1850 George and his family moved from Polk Co to nearby St. Clair Co.
General Land Office Records show him as buying 80 acres 10 Apr 1843 in Polk Co in the same
Twp and Range (Section 8, Twp 35-N, Range 24-W) as the 1838 land. It is interesting to note
that son George, Jr was born in St. Clair Co the month prior to this land purchase, so they may
have relocated about this time, or perhaps wife Susan went to stay with relatives to have the
baby. In the 1850 US Federal Census the family is living in District 79, St Clair Co, MO with 5
children living at home. He and 15 yr old John are farming. Additional Land Office Records
show him buying 40 acres 15 Apr 1853, 40 acres 1 Apr 1857, and 40 acres 15 Jan 1858, all in St
Clair Co, Section 22, Twp 36-N, Range 25-W for a total of 200 acres including the Polk Co
acreage. In the 1860 US Federal Census they are in Washington Twp, St. Clair Co, 3 children
are living at home and Susan is not listed and is assumed to have died. George is farming, John
is a Laborer, George and Sarah attended school during the census year. In the 1970 US Federal
Census George is still listed as a farmer with real estate which I cannot read, and personal
property value of $130. He is living with his daughter, Martha Thompson (a widow) and her
children in Benton Twp, Cedar Co. George, Jr is living next door with his young family.
George and Susan had 8 known children, the first 4 born in KY and the last 4 born in MO. Their
marriage date is not known. Daughter Martha lived primarily in St, Clair Co, and died at the ripe
old age of 83 yrs. She was a widow and it is said that her husband, Abraham Thompson died
while serving with the Confederacy in the Civil War, There is an A. Thompson listed as a Private
serving in Company C, 6th Missouri Cavalry probably serving with his brothers-in-law, George
and John, Not much is known about Carrie. William Marion is probably the best known as he
was a well known pioneer in Yavapa Coi, AZ. Prior to settling in AZ he traveled from MO to CA
to NV to KS back to MO then to AZ. Very little is known about John A. other than he is listed as
a Lt serving in the Confederacy, Company C, 6th Missouri Cavalry. One researcher believes he
may have died during the war. After Matilda married Joseph Savage he enlisted as a Private in
the Union, Company L, 8th Missouri Volunteer Cavalry. There is also a Joseph F. Savage as a
Private in Company B, 11 Missouri Cavalry, also Union. After the war they moved to the
Coffeeville, Montgomery Co, KS area where he farmed. She died at age 41 years and he
remarried twice after her death. Harriett married Issac Bradshaw and he is shown to have
Generation 4 (cont.)
enlisted as a Private in the Confederacy in 1862 in Company C, 6th Missouri Cavalry, perhaps
serving with his brothers-in-law. Probably after the war they moved to Saline Co, MO where
George Jr and Jane were later married. Harriett died between 1880 and 1900. Apparently after
her death he (Bradshaw) moved to Montgomery Co, KS near where his brother-in-law Joseph
Savage lived. Very little is known about the youngest, Sarah C.
Susan died before the 1860 census and George died after the 1870 census. The date and place
of their deaths are not known nor is their place of burial.

George Jr, who apparently went by G. W. at least as an adult, was born in St Clair Co, MO in
1843 about the time his parents moved from Polk Co. In the 1850 US Federal Census George is
living with his parents and siblings in District 79, St Clair Co. He is in Washington, St Clair Co in
the 1860 US Federal Census but his mother has died. In 1862 at the age of 19 years he enlisted
as a Private in Company C, 6 Missouri Cavalry, 6th Regiment, in the Confederacy. His brother,

Harriet and brother-in-law Issac Bradshaw lived in Saline Co. In the 1870 US Federal Census
George and Jane are living with their 2 daughters in Benton, Cedar Co where he is farming.
About 1870 the family moved to TX where Minnie was born in Aug 1871, and according to my
Mother, had TB later in life. It is not known where in TX they were living but they had moved
back to MO by the time their next daughter was born in Oct 1873. Their next 3 daughters were
born in MO, probably in Cedar Co. Ida was 20 months old when she died, just three weeks
before Emma was born in Feb 1877.
In 1878 they were part of a wagon train that went from Collin, St Clair Co, MO to Camp Verde,
Yavapai Co, AZ. A diary was kept by Billie Crawford, son-in-law of Alfred Longmire Gash. Alfred
was the Wagon Master. His wife had died in 1866 leaving him with 7 children. The oldest, Jane
was married to George Fain and they had four children at the time of this trip. Mary Gash was
married to Billie Crawford. They had two children. The rest of Alfred's family were single at the
time of this trip. The Gashs had two wagons and several head of cattle. The Fains had their
wagons and cattle and the Crawfords had their wagons and cattle. There were also neighbors
who wanted to go west. The diary started 29 Apr and ended 17 Sep 1878. On 9 Sep George
made contact with his brother, Bill (William Marion) Fain and for the Fains, the trip took a total of
four and a half months. It is not know how long they stayed, or if any of the families went on to
CA, or when they returned to MO. The Fains stayed several years in AZ since Georgia was born
Jan 79 (Jane became pregnant at the beginning of the trip) and Will was born Mar 82. In the
1880 US Federal Census they are in Yavapai Co, AZ and George is farming. George is listed in
the Arizona, Voter Registrations, 1866-1955: Registration date - 30 Sep 1882, Age - 39, Country
of Nativity - MO, Local Residence - Oak Creek, Yavapai, Co. Susan, Mary, Minnie, Nola and
Emma are all listed in two Public School Teachers Quarterly Report, Arizona Territory. They
attended Oak Creek School Oct 27 1882 - Dec 29 1882 and Jan 15 1883 - March 23 1883.
They must have moved back to MO later that year as son John Marion was born in MO Jan
1884.
A few years later they were again headed west, this time to Fresno, CA, where Jane's uncle
William Gash and his family had been living for many years. Their oldest daughter, Susan,
married Aug 1886 in MO so they probably left sometime after her marriage. Their daughter,
Maynolie, had died the year before. Train travel was becoming increasingly common so it is
likely that they went west by train this time. George is listed in the California, Voter Registers,
1866-1898: Year: 24 Apr 1890, Place: Fresno, CA: Age, 47, Birth Year: abt 1843, a farmer from
MO. Daughter, Mary Ellen was married in Fresno to her mother's cousin, 26 Oct 1890.
However, George and Jane's youngest child, Louis was born a month later on 25 Nov 1890 and
died just two months later on 21 Jan 1891. There is no record of where he was born although
most likely it would have been in Fresno as she would have been very late in her pregency to
have traveled very far. Also, we do not know where he died, although the Cedar Co, MO
cemetery records show him as buried in Sandridge Cemetery. Embalming became increasing
common during this time so that may have been an option in giving them some flexibility in their
return date. Daughter Susan died of TB in Cedar Co on 14 Jan 1891, just a week before her
youngest brother died. There was a lot going on in their lives in a short period of time so it is
virtually impossible to determine when they left CA but most likely it would have been again by
train travel.
The 1900 US Federal Census has them back in Benton Twp, Cedar Co where they apparently
remained for the rest of their lives. Living at home are their four youngest children, with Minnie
having married in 1896. George is still a farmer and they have had 10 children with six living.
Daughter Georgia married in Jan 1902 and Jane died on 1 Jul 1903 at the age of 54 years.
According to her obituary she was living in North Benton twp, Cedar Co. Her obituary stated:
"She was a kind and affectionate wife, mother and neighbor and more than this - a good
Christian. She was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist church. She suffered long with that
dreaded disease, consumption, but she was very patient in all her sickness, willing for the
summons to come and when the end was near she said I am so happy." Six months later two
more children were married: William "Will" on 22 Nov 1903 and a month later, Emma on 24 Dec,
Generation 5 (cont.)
both marrying Stockstill siblings.
A 1908 plat book of Cedar Co shows G. W. Fain with property in northern Benton Twp. He
appears to have 139.29 acres with a church (probably the Pleasant Ridge church) on the
northeast corner of the property, The property was Twp 34, Range 28. In 1909 youngest son
Marion married and in the 1910 US Federal Census George is living with the young couple in
Benton Twp, Cedar Co and is listed as widowed. Under employment it states "own income". In
the 1920 US Federal Census George is still living in the same location with Marion and his young
family. Living next door (in the Stockstill homestead) is Will's wife, Nola and her children, Will
having died in Feb 1913 of TB. George died 11 Dec 1923 and according to his death certificate
died of TB of the lung. He was 80 years old. Five of his ten children survived. His obituary
states in part: "He leaves thirteen grand-children and a host of friends who will morn the death of
this good man for by his many good traits of character he made many friends. Bro Fain had
been a faithful member of the Missionary Baptist church about forty years and was a member of
the Pleasant Ridge church at the time of his death. He was an affectionate husband, an
indulgent father and a good neighbor."
(Ed Note) It should be noted that both George and Jane and at least three of their children died
of TB; My mother was deathly afraid of this disease, having been around it for all of her early life.
I have not found wills for either George or his father, and I do not have information on disposition
of the lands that they purchased.

was born on 28 Jun 1884 in Cedar Co, MO. She died on 25 May 1978 in Lebanon, Linn Co, OR.
Notes for William "Willie" Alfred Fain:
Will (he was also called Willie) Fain was born in Yavapai Co, AZ Mar 1882 after his parents and
siblings had gone by wagon train from Collins, MO to Yavapai Co in 1878 where they remained
for several years. As a small boy he would have gone with his family to Fresno, CA in the 1886
to 1890 time frame. In the 1900 US Federal Census he is in Benton Twp, Cedar Co. as an 18 yr
old living with his parents and is "at School". Three years later as a 21 year old he married 18
year old Nola Stockstill on 22 Nov 1903. They were married by a minister in El Dorado Springs,
Cedar Co. Their first child, Minnie was born a year later but died when she was 14 months old of
Meningitis. Second daughter, Ruby was born 9 months later in Nov 1906, followed by Newell in
Feb1909.
The 1910 US Federal Census finds them in Cottonwood, Yavapai Co, AZ with 3 yr old Ruby and
13 month old Newell. He is working as a farmer on a truck farm. They would have gone by
train, probably to escape the cold, damp winters of southwest MO. Most likely he would have
gone for his health since a hot, dry climate was considered to be a treatment for people with TB.
It is not known how long they stayed in AZ but three years later, 13 Feb 1913 he died at the age
of 30 years in Cedar Co and is buried in Sandridge Cemetery. According to his obituary he went
west twice in search of health. It is not know when he was in AZ the second time, but most likely
it was prior to his marriage in 1903. The obituary was written by Mose Gash (his nephew) and
goes on to say "Willie belonged to no church but professed faith in Christ four years ago, and left
a bright and glorious message of peace and comfort to the sorrowing relatives. That he had no
fear of death that he was ready and willing to go to meet his God who had so graciously
pardoned his sins." His son Willie (Bill) was born the month after his death.
Notes for Magnolia "Nola" Stockstill:
Nola first appears in the 1900 US Federal Census and her name is "Magnolia", age 15 and the
youngest child living at home with her parents and siblings. It is the only document giving her
name as "Magnolia" that I have found, including marriage and death certificates and Social
Security documents. Three years later in 1903 at the age of 18 yrs, she married. On the
marriage certificate, both she and her husband are listed as living in the Olymphia community of
Cedar Co, and being married in El Dorado Springs.
After her husband's death, Feb 1913, Nola returned to her widowed mother's home (the Stockstill
homestead) and one month later, 15 Mar, Willie "Bill" was born at the Stockstill home. He must
have been given his father's nickname and was called "Willie" as a child but went by Bill as an
adult. The family continued to live in the Stockstill household and Nola worked as a clerk at the
nearby Pacetown store. Ruby basically raised her two younger brothers while her mother
worked. She always said she never had a childhood because of her early responsibilities.
In the 1920 US Federal Census Nola and the three children are still living with Sarah Stockstill in
Generation 6 (cont.)
Benton Twp and Nola is a clerk. On 25 Nov 1929 Nola, at age 45, married John P. Stewart in
Nevada, Vernon Co, MO. (I recall Mother (Ruby) saying that she would not remarry until the
children were "on their own".) He was a widower and farmer from Harrisonville, MO, his first wife
having died between 1920 and 1929. John and his first wife apparently had two adopted
children. In our family he was always called "Mr Stewart". Cousin Sharon has said that her
father Bill, at age 16, felt he had been abandoned when his mother remarried. He must have
been living with relatives at this time but I cannot find him anywhere in the 1930 US Federal
Census. However, according to the 1940 US Federal Census Bill was living in Emerson, Mills
Co, IA in 1935.
The 1930 US Federal Census shows John and Nola living in Grand River, Cass Co, MO. She is
45 yrs old and he is 63 yrs old. John is a farmer and they have a 12 yr old boy as a lodger. In
the 1940 US Federal Census they are living at the same location. They own their home, both
completed an 8th grade education, and lived at the same location in 1935. He is 73 yrs old and
she is 55 yrs old. They lived south of Harrisonville in Cass Co probably until he died. The
house was an old two-story farm house without electricity or running water. There was a handpump
well in the front yard. I remember visiting them at least once and there was an outhouse
and oil lamps. He died about 1947 and in 1949 Nola moved to Lebanon, OR where Bill was
living and working. After Bill remarried in Jul 1966 she lived alone. According to a Social
Security claim she was living at 733 Park, Apt 2, Lebanon in Jul 1968. She died at the age of 93
yrs, on 15 May 1978, as a result of a CVA (Cerebrovascular Accident) shortly after admission to
the Lebanon Community Hospital. At the time of her death she was living a 350 S. 8th, Lebanon.
As I recall, she had had a stroke several years earlier. She is buried in the Lebanon Odd
Fellows and Masonic Cemetery.

05 Sep 1964 in St. John's Hospital, Tulsa, Tulsa Co, OK.
Notes for Ruby L Cunningham:
In the 1910 US Federal Census, Ruby is a 3 yr old living with her parents and younger brother in
Cottonwood Precinct, Yavapai Co, AZ. Her father is listed as being a farmer on a truck farm on
his own account, and renting his farm. Her parents had three children, the oldest having died.
Yavapai Co is where her father had been born and where his uncle had a ranch.
The family had moved to AZ for her father's health. She had a great fear of water as she almost
drowned when she fell into a canal behind the house where they were living. Her father died of
TB when she was 6 years old. By this time the family had moved back to Cedar Co, MO. At the
time of her father's death, her mother was 8 months pregnant and moved back with her own
mother to have the baby. They continued to live with her grandmother while her mother worked
in a nearby country store (Pacetown). Ruby felt she never really had a childhood since she was
essentially responsible from an early age for raising her two younger brothers while her mother
worked at the store. She remembers standing on a wooden box at the sink washing dishes.
When she was about 12 to 14 years old she contracted flu and almost died during the dreaded
1918 Spanish Influenza Epidemic which killed millions of people worldwide. Because her father,
paternal grandparents and other close relatives died of TB, she was always very careful to
maintain good hygiene within her own family. Although she never tested positive for TB, it was
always one of her greatest fears.
In the 1920 US Federal Census, the family is still living with Ruby's grandmother although her
mother is listed as head of household and as working as a store clerk. Only the youngest
brother is listed as attending school. Ruby (13 yrs old) and Newell (11 yrs old) are not in school.
The children in this community attended a one room school (Sand Ridge, which is still standing)
which was first through eighth grades. After eighth grade children had to move into town and
stay with relatives to complete their schooling, which the family could not afford to do. Thus,
Ruby only received an 8th grade education (which is probably equivalent to a 12th grade
education by today's standards). She was excellent in math and spelling.
In about 1924 when she was about 18 yrs old, she moved to Bartlesville, OK where she had
family living. She soon got a job with a family who was employed as an executive with Phillips
66 Petroleum Company. She was a live-in house keeper and took care of their two young boys.
The address was 1112 S. Johnstone Ave. She worked there for about 10 years until her
marriage. In the 1930 US Federal Census she is listed in their household as a "Servant". In the
1940 US Federal Census she is married and living in Dewey with her husband and 4 yr old
Forrest. Maridell is not listed in the census since she was born about a month after the census
was taken. The family is living at 1225 N. Choctaw which they own and where they were also
living in 1935.
Ruby was a product of a poor, single parent family as well as the depression which was reflected
in everything she did for the rest of her life. She was frugal, hard working, and an excellent
money manager. She was fiercely loyal and dedicated to her family, After they moved to the
Tuxedo community in 1941 on ten acres belonging to her inlaws, she kept a large garden,
canned, raised chickens for food and eggs, made butter, and raised caves to butcher for food.
This was especially the case during and immediately following WWII.
After her daughter started first grade she went to work as a cafeteria worker in the same school,
and was quickly promoted to supervisor. The 1956 Tuxedo City Directory lists her a cook at the
Generation 7 (cont.)
Highland Pk School. Even after moving into their newly built house in 1949, she continued to
raise chickens for food, and sold eggs, but her main cash crop was pigs. She would buy piglets
in the fall, take home cafeteria garbage to feed them and sell the adult pigs the next spring.
(This was on five acres in the country.) She did this for a number of years.
After her husband was transferred to Tulsa in 1959 she stayed active, providing child day care
for several families up to the time of her death. She attended First Church of the Nazarene until
her husband's death, when she then became a member of the Central Church of the Nazarene.
In 1979 she moved to University Village in Tulsa, a retirement community, living in an
independent efficiency apartment until her death in 1985. She died in the hospital as a result of
complications following surgery for a ruptured aortic aneurysm.
Notes for Forrest Truesdell "Trues" Cunningham:
Notes for Truesdell's parents describe his early years.
Cousin Paul tells the following story passed down from his father. "Daddy said that when he was
a boy living in AR (Conway Co) Ed and his family would periodically visit. They would visit Etta's
sister and her family and then they would come by and visit with grandpa (Alfred). One time
when they came for a visit Truesdell wanted to ride a bull. He said that he was rather insistent
on riding. He selected a large calf that daddy said was pretty gentle. Daddy and Morrice held
the bull and helped Truesdell get on. He didn't have a cinch or rope. He just held on the fur of
the calf. When daddy and Morrice released the calf, it began to run toward the creek, bucking
some. When it reached the creek, it planted its heels and stopped. Truesdell flew over its head
and landed in the mud on the other side of the creek. Daddy said that seemed to satisfy
Truesdell's desire to be a bull rider. Truesdell may have wanted to test his skills because his
father had been a cowboy."
Truesdell graduated from Wann, Nowata Co, High School in 1926 and moved the same year with
his family to Bartlesville. He attended the Bartlesville Business School for two years then worked
for a short time in the mailing department of the Examiner Enterprise Newspaper. On 21 Jan
1929 he went to work in the office of the Dewey Portland Cement Co, initially as a stenographer.
Eventually, he became the chief clerk and office manager.
Truesdell and Ruby were married 18 May 1934 at the home of the pastor of the First
Presbyterian Church and started their married life in Dewey, OK. in 1934. Don Tyler, General
Manager of the cement plant gave them a house on the south edge of Dewey rent free for a year
as a wedding present. The address is thought to be 116 S. Wyandotte Ave. In the 1940 US
Federal Census, they are living at 1225 North Choctaw which was near the cement plant, and
own their home valued at $1500. They were also living in the same home in 1935 and it is likely
that they had recently moved there from their "free" house. Truesdell is listed as having been
born in KS and having completed one year of college. He is listed as Chief Office Clerk in a
cement plant, working a 40 hour week, working 52 weeks in 1939, earning $2000 per month.
Ruby is listed as having completed 8 years of school and in Home Housework.
It was about Feb 1941 (when Maridell was nine months ole) that they moved to the Tuxedo
community between Dewey and Bartlesville, This was 10 acres with a house owned by his
parents which had the address of Rt 1 Box 301. When they moved there they added running
water and a bathroom. They purchased the property 6 Nov 1942 for about $2250.00, the
address eventually becoming 710 NE Washington Blvd. On 16 Jul 1947 they sold the house and
3 acres to P. W. and Ruby Tate. Prior to selling the house they had build a small 2 BR cinder
block house on 2 acres (now 3916 NE Wisconsin St) behind the main house where they lived for
two years while a house was being build on the remaining 5 acres. They moved into the new
house and assumed a mortgage of $11,488.00 on 8 Apr 1949. The address for this new home
became 746 NE Washington Blvd (Hwy US 75). On 14 Jul 50 they rented then sold the block
house and 2 acres to Glenn and Nancy Blair for $5500. On 18 Sep 1958 they sold the house to
Ernest and Maud Tannehill when Trues was transfered to the new cement plant in NE Tulsa and
where he was working at the time of his death. They purchased a new construction home at
11404 E. 4th Place in a new subdivision in northeast Tulsa.
Because of his age, job and family he was low on the priority list to serve in WWII. However, at
Generation 7 (cont.)
the time the war ended, he had been scheduled to take his physical for induction and would have
been called up had the war not ended when it did.
Trues was a quiet spoken, kind and generous man. Occasionally a worker from the Dewey
cement plant would come to the house to ask for a loan of money to last until payday. (The first
black person I ever remember seeing was a man who came to our door for assistance) No one
was ever turned away and he was always repaid. He was a devout Christian and a student of
the Bible all his adult life and gave a minimum of 10 percent of his income to the church. He
was a founding member of the Eastside Church of the Nazarene in Bartlesville, eventually
transferring (probably about 1951) to the Dewey Church of the Nazarene. After moving to Tulsa,
they attended First Church of the Nazarene until his death. He was always active in the church
as Sunday school superintendent, church treasurer, adult Sunday school teacher, and song
leader/choir director, all positions which he held for many years. He had a good singing voice
and frequently sang solos and duets with his daughter. His only vanity that I can remember was
his hair; He tried many different hair products over the years to prevent baldness. Although his
hair was thin, he was successful in preventing baldness.
He loved to fish, and played tennis in his younger years. He was not handy and had no ability fix
things although he made outdoor concrete benches and ornamental items later in life. In early
March 1964 at age 55, while at work he experienced chest pain, saw the doctor but was not
hospitalized until the next morning when he was taken by ambulance to the hospital. After his
heart attack he eventually returned to work part-time but never fully recovered. He was
hospitalized a second time with congestive heart failure in September. He died at the age of 56
of complications following his initial heart attack in March.
Forrest Truesdell "Trues" Cunningham and Ruby L Cunningham had the following children:
i. LIVING CUNNINGHAM. She married ROBERT WILLIAM LOOMIS. He was born on 03
May 1935 in Palo Alto, Santa Clara Co, CA (Palo Alto Hospital). He died on 07
Apr 2012 in Cannon Memorial Hospital, Pickens, Pickens Co, SC.
Notes for Robert William Loomis:
Bob was born 3 May 1935 in Palo Alto Hospital, Palo Alto, CA. He was raised by
his parents, Joyce Dowswell (Clark) Loomis and Harry Everett Loomis in Mountain
View and Los Altos, CA. He attended Dana Street School, Mountain View
Elementary, and Mountain View High School (MVHS). He graduated from MVHS
in 1953, and received his university education at the University of California, Davis
(UCD), graduating with an AB Degree in American Civilization, May 1957. In Dec
1956 he married Darly Ann Jenkins. Three children from this marriage are Robert
Scott, Kenneth Michael, and Teri Leanne Loomis. Bob and Darly were divorced in
1976.
Upon graduation from UCD, and completion of a four year Army ROTC program,
he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant, Regular Army, Infantry, U.S. Army. He
attended basic infantry Officers School, Ft. Benning, GA, and was assigned to Ft.
Ord, CA where he served for two years. In 1959 he attended the Military Police
School, Ft. Gordon, GA and was subsequently assigned to Giessen Post,
Germany in 1960 as a military police officer. In 1963 he transferred to Military
Intelligence Branch, attended special and advanced MI training at Ft. Holabird,
MD. Upon completion of training he served as a intelligence officer in many
varied assignments. His assignments included Sacramento, CA, Vietnam (twice),
Iran and Washington, D.C. Upon completion of over 23 years of service in Sep
1980, he retired at the United States Army Intelligence and Security Command
(INSCOM), Arlington Hall Station, VA, where he had served as INSCOM Public
Affairs Officer.
While assigned to Washington D.C from 1973-77, he attended American
University, receiving a Graduate Certificate in Public Relations. On 11 Dec 1976
Bob married Maridell Cunningham. Following his retirement he accompanied
Maridell (a USAF Nurse and Officer) on her many assignments to Colorado
Generation 7 (cont.)
(twice), Japan, and Maryland. Prior to Maridell's assignment to Japan in 1984,
Bob worked as a financial planner. While in Japan from 1984-87, Bob taught
professional writing courses for members of the USAF and civilians. He was also
employed as the Testing Officer for the USAF Education Center. He also taught
English at a local Misawa English Language School. While in Japan he applied
for graduate school of the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. Upon
Maridell's assignment back to CO, Bob embarked on an intensive 22 month, 61
semester hour graduate program in Counseling and Human Services, graduating
May 1989. Maridell was reassigned to Andrews AFB, MD and Bob was employed
as Mental Health Counselor at the St. Mary's Co, MD County Health Department
Mental Health Services, Leonardtown, MD until 1994. Subsequent to the move to
our retirement home in Pickens, SC in 1994, Bob was employed as a Mental
Health Counselor, Greenville Mental Health Center, Greenville, SC until he retired
in 2003. After this "final" retirement, Bob devoted much of his time to the church.
He enjoyed his work with Pastoral Care, Worship Ministry, and assisting our local
Parish grow. He also enjoyed traveling at any opportunity and cutting grass with
his large John Deer tractor on our 54 acres. Bob had a heart attack at home and
died 7 Apr 2012.
Bob had an inquiring mind, loved educational pursuits, could fix almost anything,
loved to build/refinish furniture, but most of all loved his family especially his two
grandsons, Jeremy and Andrew.

80. ii. LIVING CUNNINGHAM JR. He married LIVING HOWARD.
64. WILLIAM NEWELL7 FAIN (William "Willie" Alfred6, George Washington5 Jr, George Washington4,
William3, Samuel2, Nicholas1) was born on 11 Feb 1909 in Cedar Co, MO. He died on 18 May
1990 in Lorimor, Union Co, IA. He married Mary Rosella Foland, daughter of Benjamin Franklin
Foland and Tersa Anne Young, on 26 Nov 1931 in Lawrence, KS. She was born on 07 Nov 1910
in Richland, Decatur Co, IA. She died on 27 Dec 1995 in Creston, Union Co, IA.
Notes for William Newell Fain:
Newell was born in Cedar Co, MO and must have traveled with his family to AZ when he was a
baby, since he first appears in the 1910 US Federal Census as 1 3/12 year old living with his
parents and older sister in Cottonwood, Vavapai, AZ where his father is farming. It appears from
his father's obituary that the family traveled to AZ twice because of his father's poor health from
Generation 7 (cont.)
TB.
After his father's death in Cedar Co, Feb 1913, he, his younger brother and older sister went to
live with their grandmother Stockstill on her farm while his mother worked as a clerk in the nearby
country store. He and his brother were essentially raised by his older sister. In the 1920 US
Federal Census he is 11 years old and still living in his grandmother's home. All the children
attended the Sandridge one room school and completed an eighth grade education.
According to what Rosella wrote in the 1981 Union Co family history book, in 1926 (at age 17)
Newell set out for Springfield, Mo where he attended a business college before going north to IA
in the fall of 1928. That year he started working on Raymond Breece's farm near Climax, IA. It
was at a Farm Bureau meeting in Climax in 1929 that he met his future wife. In the 1930 US
Federal Census he is 21 years old and a Lodger and a hired laborer for Lewis and Francis Allen
on their "general farm" in West, Montgomery Co, IA.
After their marriage in Nov 1931, they set out to farm all their married fives. They worked for
farmers in the Red Oak area for five years. They then moved to Wheatland, WY in 1936 while
expecting their first child, born Oct 1936 in Wheatland. They worked for a time for Rosella's
brother in Torrington, WY as their second child, Joan Rae was born in Oct 1938. The family of
four then moved back to Osceola, IA in 1940. In the 1940 US Federal Census they are living in
Liberty, Clarke Co, IA and Newell is working as a laborer on a farm with an income of $800 and
renting their home. They moved to farms west of the Dodge Center Church in Union Co in
1942. Little Joan Rae was fatally injured when hit by a car that year. A second son, Dannie was
born in Apr 1943 and daughter Lana was born in May 1945. In 1949 Newell and Rosella
purchased their farm from Ira Walker. This farm was in Dodge township, 2 1/2 miles north of the
Dodge Center Church. This sprawling river bottom farm with rolling hills and forests was home to
their children who were raised there and educated in the Afton-East Union systems.
During those early years in IA they would weekly take cream and eggs to town to earn $6.00-
8.00. They would always save 50 cents to buy gas to get back. They never drove their car
during the week, but drove a two wheeled, horse drawn, cedar cart. Newell bought his first team
of horses in 1940 and named them Bill and Barney. Since they were colts, he had to gently train
them in the field. He used them until 1949, but he bought his first tractor in 1942.
After they retired, they maintained their large home and farming operation. Their son Dan
farmed the acres and operated the hog and cattle business. Newell's great love over the years
was coon hunting and he owned several excellent dogs. He busied himself with large garden
projects, visiting his friends, and keeping occupied with their six granddaughters.
Notes for Mary Rosella Foland:
Rosella wrote about herself and her family in the 1981 Union County history book, portions of
which are as follows:
Rosella was born at Grandriver, IA and was one of eleven children. Her family farmed north of
Grandriver. When she was 15, the family moved to Kimball, NE and several of her sisters and
brothers either settled in the Kimball or Grandriver areas. Rosella graduated from Kimball High
School and then moved back to Essex, IA to live with her sister for two years. She took the Iowa
teachers exam and taught school one year. She did not like teaching, however because of "four
big boys, bigger than me!"
But it was during that time that she met a strikingly handsome (dark hair, dark, eyes) young man
named Newell Fain. In fact they met at a Farm Bureau meeting at Climax in 1929. He courted
her with his 1929 Ford Roadster and by 1931 they decided to tie the knot. They left at
Thanksgiving time to travel to Lawrence, KS to be married. The event cost them $5.00 and they
celebrated by shining their shoes and visiting Newell's mother. At this time they set out to farm
all their married lives. They worked for farmers in IA and WY until Newell bought their farm in
Union Co in 1949. The Dodge Center Church was the hub of activity for the family. Rosella
spent all her married life as housewife, mother and church worker. Her hobbies were sewing,
knitting, and flower gardening.
Generation 7 (cont.)
William Newell Fain and Mary Rosella Foland had the following children:
i. JOAN RAE8 FAIN was born on 24 Oct 1938 in Lyman, Scotts Bluff Co, NE. She died
on 18 May 1942 in Afton, Union Co, IA.
Notes for Joan Rae Fain:
Three year old Joan Rae was living with her parents and older brother on the Ira
Walker farm just west of the Dodge Center church when she was struck by a car
while crossing the highway just in front of their home. She died two days later as
a result of a brain concussion.
ii. DANNIE "DAN" RAY FAIN was born on 02 Apr 1943 in Afton, Union Co, IA. He died
on 11 Apr 2014 in Creston, Union Co, IA. He married an unknown spouse (Never
Married).
Notes for Dannie "Dan" Ray Fain:
Dannie "Dan" was born at home on the farm west of the Dodge Center Church in
Apr 1943 and grew up on the family farm. He was in 4-H and developed an
interest in Angus cattle and farming from his father. He graduated from East
Union High School in 1961 and enrolled in a business school in Omaha and
worked for Union Pacific Railroad from 1961 - 1965. While in Omaha, he took six
months of basic training in the Army Reserve at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO and was
in the Reserves six years, serving in Omaha and Ames, IA, He also earned his
pilot's license while living there.
Dan left Omaha and enrolled in college in 1965. Pursuing a career in agriculture,
he graduated from Iowa State University in 1969 with a B.S. degree in Agri
Business. He was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Farm Loan
Management from 1969 to 1973 when he returned to his parents' farm north of
Afton to run a farm operation. With the cooperation of his father and brother he
went into the management and operation of the hog, cattle and crop business.
In 1976 Dan bought his own farm which, like his father's and brother's was on the
Grand River in Dodge township, and spent many hours remodeling and
redecoration the farm house. His farm operation as well as his dads' and
brothers' farms were consolidated into one operation - the "Fain Farms, Inc" in
1986. Dan retired from the USDA in 2005 and from farming in 2009, and the
farms were rented out. He purchased a home in Camp Verde, AZ, (in the same
area where his father once lived as an infant) and lives between AZ and IA
(Current as of 2011/12)
Dan died 11 Apr 2014. The following is from a portion of his obituary.
"Dannie "Dan" Fain, age 71, of Creston, Iowa died Friday, April 11, 2014. at HCI
Care Service Hospice House in Creston. He was born the son of Newell and
Mary Rosella (Foland) Fain on April 2, 1942 near Afton, Iowa. He graduated from
the East Union High School in 1961. After serving his country for a short time
with the United States Army and being Honorable discharged, he went on to
attend Creston Junior College, Omaha Business School and then on to Iowa State
University in Ames, Iowa, graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Agricultural

While attending school in Omaha, Dan worked at Union Pacific Railroad. After
graduation from college in 1966, he began working for the Farmers Home

was asked to return to FHA and worked tn the Osceola, Iowa office until his
retirement in 2008. During his time with the FHA. he was sent to Russia for 6
weeks, a trip that left a lasting impression on him. In 2009, Dan moved to Camp
Verde, Arizona where he lived until August of 2013, when his health began to fail,
Generation 7 (cont.)
at which time, he returned to his beloved Union County roots to Creston, Iowa.
Dan was a quiet man, and though he never married, family was very important to
him. He so enjoyed farming along side his brother, whether it be raising calves,
row crop or baling hay,and was proud of what they were able to accomplish. He
had a vast circle of friends, both in Southern Iowa and Camp Verde, Arizona area,
many of them were like his extended family. Some invited him to go on trips, and
some would stop for a visit and he always had time for everyone."

unable to find him in the 1930 US Federal Census but he probably followed his brother into the
