Descendants of Thomas Stockstill/Stogsdill
Generation 1 1. THOMAS STOCKSTILL /1 STOGSDILL was born about 1735 in Baltimore Co, MD. He died about Jul 1797 in Rowan Co, NC. He married SARAH / HANNAH GOSNELL. She was born in ? MD. She died in ? NC. Notes for Thomas Stockstill / Stogsdill: Early researchers believed that Stockstills were in Maryland as early as the 1600s with other variations of the name found such as Stocksdale, Stocksdill, Stogsdale, Stogdale, Stogsdal, Stogstill and Stogsdill. However, very little is known about our early Stockstills. The first evidence of our Thomas Stockstill is in The North Carolina, Compiled Census and Census Substitutes Index, 1790-1890, listing Thomas Stogsdal living in Rowan Co, NC,Township: The Jersey Settlement, in 1768. He is next found in the Abstracts of the Minutes of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, Rowan County, North Carolina, 1775-1789, Vol. III. On 7 Aug, 1778 he is listed as one of the persons permitted to take the Oath of Allegiance. On 7 Nov 1778 Thomas purchased 300 of land on the waters of Dutchman's Creek. (Grant No. 1329, Issued 25 Oct 1786, Entry No. 1348, Entered 7 Nov 1778, Book No. 68, Page No 100, NC Land Office: Entries, Warrants, Plats of Survey.) Thomas Stogdill is in the U,S. Census Reconstructed Records, 1660-1820, in North Carolina, Rowan County, 1780, in "Cap Johnston's District". He is listed in the 1790 U. S. Federal Census for Rowan Co, NC as Thomas Stogdale with 2 Free White Persons - Males - Under 16;1 Free White Persons - Males - 16 and over; 1 Free White Persons - Females; 4 Number of Household Members. On the same page is Zebadiah Stogdale. The last document found for him is his will executed in Rowan Co, NC on 15 Jul 1797. Toward the end of the document he says "I give and bequest to my son Zebudia Stogdill one hundred acres of land laying in Baltimore County In the State of Maryland and further more I give him all my rights to lands Hereto belonging by me in any ways before named willed and bequeathed ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and test." It is signed with his mark "Thomas Stogdill". His bequest of land in Baltimore Co to his son is in line with the 1790 US Federal Census which lists several "Stockstills" in Patapsco Lower Hundred, Baltimore, MD. The exact date of death is not known although it may have occurred shortly after the will was written since it states that he was "very sick and weak in health and of body. . . " There is also no record of his wife's name (although some say it was Hannah) or other children. Thomas Stockstill / Stogsdill and Sarah / Hannah Gosnell had the following children: 2. i. ZEBEDEE OR ZEBADIAH2 STOCKSTILL was born about 1750 in MD. He died between 1830-1832 in Warren Co, TN. He married Rachel Gladman, daughter of ? Michael Gladman and Rachel (Unknown), in MD. She was born about 1759 in Baltimore Co, MD. She died about Jul 1846 in Warren Co, TN. ii. WARNER OR WARNELL STOCKSTILL was born about 1752 in MD. He died about 1826 in ? Warren Co, TN. iii. THOMAS STOGSDILL was born about 1756. He died about 1833. iv. ELISHA STOCKSTILL was born about 1761. He died about 1848. v. JOSHUA STOCKSTILL was born in 1768 in Baltimore Maryland. He died in 1845 in Hancock Cty, MS. He married MARY LAVINA KNIGHT. She was born about 1779. She died about 1849 in MS. Generation 2 2. ZEBEDEE OR ZEBADIAH2 STOCKSTILL (Thomas Stockstill /1 Stogsdill) was born about 1750 in MD. Notes for Zebedee or Zebadiah Stockstill: It is not known when Zebadiah and his family moved to Rowan Co, NC. (The earliest record of his father in Rowan Co is 1768.) All indications are that he married Rachel in MD and his first several children were born there up until about 1790 although this is in question since he is also listed as being in NC in 1780. In the U.S. Census Reconstructed Records, 1660-1820, there is a Generation 2 (cont.) Zebedah Stockstill living in Rowan Co, NC in 1780, "Cap. Johnston's District". Zebediah Stogdale and his family are listed in the 1790 U. S. Federal Census in Rowan Co, NC on the same page as his father Thomas Stogdale. There are 3 Free White Person - Males - Under 16; 1 Free White Persons - Males - 16 and over; 4 Free White Persons - Females for a total of 8 Household Members. It is almost certain that Rachel was a Gladman and there were Gladmans living in the area of Baltimore Co, MD where there were Stockstills living. Also, daughter Lucinda (Kirby) named one of her daughters Rachel Gladman Kirby most; likely after the child's grandmother. There is a Zebadiah Stockstill in the 1800 US Federal Census for Salisbury Twp, Rowan CO, NC. with a total of 7 in the household - a male and female 25 to 44, 3 males and one female under 10 and one male 10-15. In 1802 Zebadiah and Warner sold land on Dutchman's Creek. Apparently the family lived in Lincoln Co, NC for awhile and then in Madison Co, KY prior to their final move to Warren Co, TN by 1810. Two of his daughters (Nancy Ann and Elizabeth) were married in Madison County KY in Mar 1807. He is not found in the 1810 US Federal Census and would have been in Warren Co by that time. There is a bio of Bethel Twp, Miami Co, OH published in 1880 which says that son Thomas ". . .his native State was Maryland but when quite young he removed to Tennessee with his father, who was a speculator in slaves. Thomas being conscientiously opposed to the slave traffic, left Tennessee at the age of 16, and came to Ohio. . ." Goodspeed lists those who settled in Warren Co between 1800 and 1810 in the Thirteenth District as John Kirby, Wm Kirby, the Hoppes, the Edges, the Stockstills and the Womacks. Most of these surnames are closely linked with the Stockstills. The Stockstills probably arrived in Middle TN about the time Warren Co was established in 1807. (Daughter Elizabeth's oldest child is listed as having been born in Warren Co in Nov 1807.) The county seat, McMinnville was formed in 1810. The earliest mention of Zebadiah in Warren Co is in the Carthage Gazette, May 4, 1810, Vol, 59 which states "Zebodiah Stockstill, on Charles Creek, has taken up a strawberry roan colt." McMinnville was surveyed in 1810 and original purchasers of lots included Elisha Stockstill, lot 35, Feb 6, 1811 for $36.00 which was near the courthouse, and Shadrick Stockstill (not sure of his connection to the family - maybe a cousin or uncle) lots 60 and 61, May 7, 1811 for $29. The lots were sold to help defray the expense of constructing the new county building. Zebahiah, Elisha and David are all listed as early land owners south of and along Charles Creek and north of and along Barran Fork of the Collins River which run parallel to each other off Collins River just west of McMinnville. The 1820 Federal Census for Warren Co, TN for Zebadiah lists a male and female 16 thru 25, a male and female 45 and over and a total of 9 slaves of various ages - children thru adults. In the 1830 US Federal Census for Warren Co, TN for Zebedee there is a male and female ages 70-79 and 13 slaves of various ages - children thru adults. Tennessee Land Grants, Vol II lists five land grants for Zebedee in Warren Co between 1832 and 1835 for a total of 400 acres. Some or all or these grants may be for a relative since Zebedee/Zebadiah probably died between 1830 and 1833 when wife Rachel wrote her will. David, Warner, and Elisha also obtained the same type of land grants. Zebadiah is not listed in the 1840 US Federal Census and has died. As far as is known he did not leave a will. Rachel did leave a will dated 31 July 1833. It reads as follows: "I Rachel Stockstill of Warren County, being ancient and full of days and knowing that my time is well nigh spent, being desirous to dispose of all such worldly substance as has pleased God to Bless me with, I first desire to be buryed after my death in a decent Christain like order and my debts paid. Secondly, I being lawfully possessed of a negro man known by the name of David and his wife Nelly, both of them formerly the property of my husband Zebadiah Stockstill, now dead, it is my will that they shall be free after my death. I also give to them all my livestock, bedding and other plunder which they hold in their house. Furthermore I give and bequeath unto my son Elisha Stockstill and my daughter Lucy Kirby all my remaining property not mentioned above. I appoint my son Elisha Stockstill and my son in law Robert W. Kirby the executors of this will. Witnessed by William Freeman and John Keef." Proved in open court 6 July 1846. Elisha and Lucy may have been the only children living in the area. Other children may have been living elsewhere and therefore were not named in the will. Generation 2 (cont.) Zebedee or Zebadiah Stockstill and Rachel Gladman had the following children: 3. i. DAVID3 STOCKSTILL was born between 1775-1790 in MD. He died about 1827 in Warren Co, TN. He died on 24 Feb 1848 in Warren Co., TN. He married (1) (UNKNOWN) HESTER. He married (2) LENNA OR LANNA (UNKNOWN) about 1821 in Warren Co, TN. She was born about 1805 in NC. She died after 1870 in ? Warren Co, TN. Notes for Elisha Stockstill: Elisha is first mentioned by name when he purchased town lot number 35 for $36 on 6 Feb 1811 in McMinnville, Warren Co, TN. He appears to be living with his parents in the 1820 US Federal Census and may have married shortly thereafter. He is in the 1830 US Federal Census in Warren Co, TN with 2 males under 5, 1 male 5-9, 1 male 30-39, 1 male 50-59, 1 female 20-29, 1 female 50-59 and 1 slave 36-54. Based on this census date he was born between 1791 and 1800 but probably closed to the 1791 date which would have made him about 20 yrs old when he purchased the McMinnville lot. If his birth date is about 1791, he would have been born shortly before or after his parents moved from MD to NC, although there is a Zebadah in NC in 1880. In about 1821 when Elisha was about 30 years old he fathered an illegitimate son - Thomas Gilbert Hester. This seems to be around the time he married Lenna. Thomas was recognized by his father in the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee passed 3 Oct 1833 stating that he ". . .shall be joint heir of his natural father, Elisha Stockstill, as if born in lawful wedlock". There is only one reference to a Hester that I can find and that is Garland Hester listed in the Surname List of the 1820 Census of Warren Co, TN. (TN GenWeb Project) This is in the time frame of the birth of Thomas so perhaps his father or a grandson? Lenna was probably only about 16 years old when Elisha married her (he would have been about 30 yrs old) and we do not known her last name, only that she was born in NC. We have a fairly accurate birth year (1805) for her from the 1870 US Federal Census when she was living in daughter Lousia's household, and she in the appropriate age range in the 1820 US Federal Census. In the 1840 US Federal Census there are 3 males and 5 females under 14, 1 male and 1 female 20-29 and 5 slaves of various ages. 5 employed in Agriculture and 2 persons over 20 who cannot read and write (probably Elisha and Lenna). In his mother's will dated 31 Jul 1833 and proven in open court 6 Jul 1846, Elisha and sister Lucy (Kirby) are the only children named in her will and he and Lucy's husband are named as executors. From 1824 to 1838 he bought over 500 acres in 8 separate land transactions, ranging from 14 acres to 100 acres. Most if not all of this property was along Charles Creek and Barren Fork of the Collins River. A grandson of Lucinda Stockstill Cooksey, daughter of Elisha wrote the following portion of a letter to a cousin: ". . .Lucinda Stockstill came from a wealthy slave owning family whose hobby was race horses. She never lost interest in racing and her love of thoroughbreds, but the Lincoln-Douglas debate on the controversial issues that divided the North and South convinced her that slavery was wrong. When she and (her husband) decided to come Generation 3 (cont.) to Missouri, (her father) told her that her going away gift would be two young bucks, two wenches, and two thousand dollars in gold. (Lucinda) thought it over and said. "Give me the two thousand and let me pick two young mares and a stallion from the paddock and keep the niggers,," and that is the way it was. . .." The Cookseys left TN about 1847 in two oxen-drawn covered wagons, crossing the Mississippi River at St. Genevieve, MO by ferry and settled in Cedar Co, MO. It is obvious he was a prosperous man when he died in Feb 1848 without leaving a will. In Warren Co TN Will Book 2 the following is recorded 3 Apr 1848. An inventory of the personal estate of Elisha Stockstill, dec'd, consisting of a negro boy named Henry, age 19, stock, tools, furniture. Notes due estate from 10 people including Rachael Stockstill, Thomas Kirby and Robert Kirby. G.H. Stockstill and S. M. Womack are administrators. G. W. Hennegar was guardian of his four minor children (John, Sarah, Louisa and Alexander) and there are entries in the county records up to 1 Jan 1858. After his death there were several law suits which apparently involved the land, There are several references in the Warren Co Chancery Court Minutes. In the suit of Garland Stockstill (Administrator) and others vs Thomas Stockstill and others, land is to be sold. In the suit of Francis K. Bell vs Thos. Stockstill and others, Thos., was a non resident at the time of filing the bill. (He was living in Dade Co, MO by this time.) His father, Elisha Stockstill, departed this life in Warren County in 1848 and his property has been sold. The debt owed to Complainant is to be paid out of the proceeds of the sale. The widow will take a child's part in lieu of dower. A suit was shown by Garland Stockstill and Samuel Womack admr. of Elisha Stockstill vs Lenna Stockstill the widow of Elisha Stockstill, John, Sarah, Louisa and Alexander Stockstill, (the minor children) Thos. Stockstill, Lucinda Cookery and others. The estate was divided into ten shares, the widow having agreed to take a child's part. The heirs of David Stockstill were mentioned. We only know of 7 children and since the estate was divided into ten shares (including Lenna) there may be two children of which we are unaware. This is the only reference for Alexander that I have been able to find. I have not been able to find any reference to Lenna other than her living with her widowed daughter, Louisa in the 1870 US Federal Census, in District 13, Warren Co, TN. It lists her as 65 yrs old and born in NC. Louisa and her family apparently stayed in TN but none of them are found again after the 1870 Federal Census. Elisha's youngest sister, Lucinda moved to Benton Co, Mo and his six oldest children also moved to MO. Thomas moved to Cedar Co about 1843, William and John N. may have come at the same time since they were unmarried, with sister Lucinda and her family coming about four years later and Sarah Jane and her husband moving to MO in the 1850s then to TX during the War and back to MO afterward. Nancy A. and her husband moved to MO prior to their first child being born there in 1852. It is not known if it was because of the slavery issue but it probably was a contributing factor since the Stockstills and their relatives all fought with the Union during the Civil War. Elisha Stockstill and (Unknown) Hester had the following child: 14. i. THOMAS GILBERT4 (HESTER) STOCKSTILL was born in 1821 in Warren Co., TN. He died on 10 Oct 1868 in Dade Co., MO. He died on 10 Oct 1868 in Dade Co., MO. He married Minerva Hand, daughter of James Campbell Hand and Lucinda Stembridge, on 26 Sep 1841 in Warren Co, TN. She was born on 28 Dec 1821 in TN. She died on 01 Jan 1916 in Cedar Co., MO. Notes for Thomas Gilbert (Hester) Stockstill: From Tennessee State Archives - Book "Private Acts Passed At The First Session of The State of Tennessee - 1833" is the following information: An Act to change the name of Thomas Gilbert Hester, to Thomas Gilbert Stockstill. "Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee, That Thomas Gilbert Hester, of Warren county, shall hereafter be known by the name of Thomas Gilbert Stockstill, and shall be joint heir of his natural father, Elisha Stockstill, as if born in lawful wedlock." Passed October 3, 1833. Thomas was almost 13 years old when he was legally recognized by his father. His birth occurred around the time of his father's marriage to Lenna/Lanna whose maiden name is unknown, nor do we know the name of his biological mother other than her last name may have been Hester. Nevertheless, he appears to have been the first born child and son of a prominent father who was well established in Warren Co, TN. We don't know about his childhood but he would have been a child of privilege for those times if he was supported by his father. Thomas married Minerva Hand when they were both 20 years old. Three years later (about 1843) after their first child was born they left TN for MO. We do not know what drew them further west. Perhaps they were antislavery as was his younger sister when she moved to the same Generation 4 (cont.) area of MO four years later or perhaps it was because of the new lands opening up in southwest MO, or both. They first settled in Dade Co which was formed in Jan 1841 from Berry and Polk counties. They were in Cedar Co later which was formed in 1845 from St. Clair and Dade Counties. As new counties continued to be formed they might well have been living in the same location Thomas, at the age of 24, was a volunteer in the Mexican War. He was a Sergent in Capt James J. Clarkson's Co. F, 3d Reg't Missouri Mounted Vols. He enrolled April 26, 1847 at Greenfield, MO for the period during the war with Mexican. He was mustered into service June 11, 1847 at Independence, MO, and was honorably discharged October 15, 1848, at Independence, MO. Under the Remarks section: Muster Roll (MR) Oct 15 1848 says:"Enrolled May 22 1847 at Independence, Mo." MR June 30 1848 says: "Ranks as 2nd Lieut" with remark, "Absent since 20 Jun 1848, sick at Santa Cruz." MR Oct 14, 1848 says: "Elected from Serg't 28 March 1848, to 2nd Lieut." In the 1850 US Federal Census they are in District 25 in Dade Co with a total of four children and Thomas is a farmer. His sister, Lucinda and her family are living nearby. They are also in Dade Co in Morgan Twp in the 1860 US Federal Census and Dadeville is their post office. He is a farmer with value of real estate 2000, and value of personal property 1300. Brother, John is living next door. Their family is now complete with eight children. Between Aug 1848 and Oct 1860 he made five land purchases through Federal land patents, for a total 362.7 acres, all in Dade Co. Local history indicates that the Stockstills were in Cedar Co about 1855. However, census data and land purchases put them in Dade Co at least until 1860. It is possible that they moved to Cedar Co shortly before the Civil War. When the Civil War came to MO, Thomas again signed up for the Union. He enlisted as a 2nd Lieut on July 5 1861 at Melville, MO at the age of 40 and was mustered in Dec 18 at Rolla, Mo. He was in Company A under Capt Paynter, 6th Cavalry Regiment Missouri. The Regiment was formed 1 Nov 1861 and did "valiant service" in the engagements at Copridge's Mills, West Glaize, Salem and West Plains, Champion's Hill, Big Black River and Brideport as well as other battles. The Regiment was mustered 12 Sep 1865. Thomas was promoted to 1st Lieut March 9, 1862 and dismissed from the service Dec 4, 1863. According to family history, he was cited for bravery in action at Henrytown, MO on Oct 13, 1861. He was wounded and captured in the skirmish at Cane Hill on Dec 6, 1862. Family history also indicates that he left the Army to take an assignment as a spy for the North, and went to TX and enlisted in the Confederate army to be in a position to send back information of Confederate maneuvers. The following is an extensive description of the Border Warfare in MO which included the Stockstills which was written by Clayton Abbott, "Historical Sketches of Cedar County Missouri." published in 1967. The guerrilla raids apparently occurred in the spring of 1862. "A group of Vernon County guerrillas made an expedition into Cedar County, pillaging and burning any houses which could be identified as belonging to Union sympathizers. By coincidence, they started this rampage on the same day that Anderson Morton and his Militia began their trip to Nevada. They had not heard of the killing of Shuey and Whitley, and could not have known of the invasion of Vernon County by Morton's Militia. This guerrilla expedition was organized by William Gabbert who lived abut one mile north of the little village of Beliamy. There were about twenty-five men in the group consisting mainly of residents of the southeastern part of Vernon County, although there were some from other areas, including Captain William Bridgman, of Mackson County. The raiders started from Gabbert's house and went directly east into Cedar County. They met practically no opposition as most of the men were away from home, enlisted in the army or in the enrolled militia. This group of raiders followed the usual policy of allowing the women to remove their personal belongings before the houses were burned. However, they were not averse to pillaging, and carried away anything of value which struck their fancy. Horses were the most prized bounty, and any which were found were immediately confiscated. Among the houses burned on this raid was one belonging to old man Shuey, who had been murdered at Nevada. His widow informed the raiders of her husband's death and begged that her house be spared, Generation 4 (cont.) however, her pleadings were to no avail. When Mr. and Mrs. Austin delivered the body of Shurey, they arrived late at nightfall and found the house in ashes with Mrs. Shuey and the children hovering by the roadside. It was necessary for them to travel another six miles before the body could be disposed of. The main targets of the guerrillas were the houses of poor people living in isolated areas. They did not dare attack villages like White Hare nor towns like Stockton, for fear of meeting with members of this militia. The houses which they destroyed were small and not a great value, but they were the only homes of the people who lived there. Raids like this one, and the one on Nevada City, only accentuated the suffering of those who already had broken homes and were near starvation by the ravages of the war. Another of the houses burned during Gabbert's raid into Cedar County was that of Thomas Stockstill. (Ed note: According to family history this occurred on 27 May 1862. After the war they rebuilt across the road from the original home site.) He lived about four miles east and slightly north of the spot where the Olympia store was later built. At that time it was an isolated area on Horse Creek about a half mile above the intersection with Stinking Creek. Thomas Stockstill had settled in the area with his family about 1855, and was typical of the families living in that section of Cedar County. (Ed note: From census records it appears that the family did not move to Cedar Co until after 1860.) He was unfortunate in that he was in the fringe area between that which was predominately Union and the territory which was controlled by the Confederate forces. When the War came there were two boys of military age in the Stockstill family. They were Elisha, the older, and John, who was seventeen. (Ed note: Actually, in 1861, John would have been 19 yrs old and Elisha 17 yrs old.) It is to John that we are indebted for the legend of the war experience of this family. Thomas Stockstill at first cast his lot with the North and went to Greenfield, where he organized a company of militia. The life of a militiaman was not exciting enough for him, however, and he took an assignment as a spy for the North. He then went to Texas and enlisted in the Confederate army, to be in a position to send back information of Confederate maneuvers. The eldest son, Elisha, was not interested in fighting. Some though he was sympathetic toward the South. In any event he left the State and went to Iowa (Ed note: Probably Ohio) to live with an uncle. He later was drafted and served with an Ohio regiment. He was in Sherman's march through Georgia to the sea. The other son, John, enlisted in the Union army and drove a supply wagon. He was at the battle at Wilson Creek, and brought up the rear as the Union forces marches north after their defeat at Springfield. At the time of Gabbert's raid the only male in the Stockstill household was young Tom, who was thirteen. (Ed note: He would have been 14 yrs old in 1862, and his younger brother may have already died.) When he saw the raiders approaching he took to his heels and made his escape, although one of the guerrillas took a shot at the fleeing boy. After her house was burned Mrs.Stockstill gathered her family together, took as much of their belongings as they could transport, and moved to Melville (Dadeville); it was there they lived prior to settling in Cedar County. She not only had friends in Melville, but there was less danger of molestation from guerrillas and bushwhackers in populated areas. Young Tom Stockstill managed to save a saddle horse which he took with him when he moved to Dade County. He later rode this house while herding cattle in the prairie region north and west of Melville. One day when thus engaged he was attacked by a group of some half dozen guerrillas. If he had been alert he might have escaped on his fast horse, however, he allowed himself to become surrounded and forced to surrender. The guerrillas also captured an old man, and took the two of them to their headquarters a few miles west of the present site of Jerico Springs. There they sold Tom's horse at auction, to the highest guerrilla bidder. It brought the fabulous price of $600 in Confederate money. The only food the prisoners had was green apples which they picked from trees. After a day or so Tom and the old man were told that they could leave. The old man was reluctant, and confided to Tom that they would be shot as soon as they were out of sight. Tom, who thought that all the outlaws wanted of him was his valuable horse, Generation 4 (cont.) had more confidence in there sincerity. His confidence proved to be unjustified, in that they were both shot, however, the boy received only a shoulder wound. He pretended to be dead until the guerrillas left, then, after a torturous journey finally made it back to Melville. After the war was over the Stockstill family were reunited and again lived at their farm on Horse Creek. They were more fortunate than many families in that they all returned, but there were scars left on this family, as there were others; scars that never were to heal." According to family history, Thomas was well-known in the area for two things. He was an influential leader in the Republican party and was serving as the Republican representative for Benton Township at the time of his death. He was also widely known for the fine horses he raised and raced. As it turned out, Aaron/Brown (his name is unclear) died during the war (1862) at about 12 yrs of age, It is said that he was buried in the Carlock Cemetery near Dadeville. Elisha died a year (1866) after the war ended at the age of 22 of malaria and yellow fever and was buried on the homestead in the Stockstill Cemetery. Thomas died in 1868, 3 years after the war at 47 yrs of age. The cause of his death is not known. He had been appointed Mule Creek postmaster on 3 Jan 1864 and again on 3 Jan 1867 and was the Mule Creek postmaster at the time of his death. He was a member of the Stockton Lodge No. 283, A. F. & A. M. which expressed the sorrow of the Lodge after his death. Thomas is buried in Long Cemetery in Dade Co near Stockton and is honored as a veteran "2D LIEUT CO F 3 MO CAV MEXICAN WAR". Minerva filed a pension claim based on his service in the Mexican War in Mar, 1888. Supporting documents verified their marriage date and place by his sister Lucinda Cooksey. Notes for Minerva Hand: Based on DNA, her father is James Campbell Hand, born in SC in 1790 and died in TX in 1855. Her mother was born in VA and died in Warren Co, TN. Not much else is known about her parents. More is known about her grandfather, Samuel through his Revolutionary War Pension application. It appears the Hands arrived in Warren Co, TN not long after the Stockstills. After her husband's death, Minerva continued to live on the family farm in Cedar Co. In the 1870 US Federal Census she is on the homestead with her three youngest children with 2000 in real estate value and 300 in personal property value. In the 1880 US Federal Census the three youngest children are still at home and also listed is a one year old child (Maggie Stockstill) who is listed as illegitimate (most likely belonging either to Martha or Louisa. The child is not found in any later census.) Son, John is living next door with his family. On Jan 29, 1887, Minerva was awarded a widow's pension in the amount of $8.00 per month in return for her husband's military service in the Mexican War. In the 1900 US Federal Census. Minerva is now living with son, Samuel who has finally married (to a much younger wife). It appears that he has taken over the old homestead since John is still living next door. Samuel and his wife Emma do not yet have children. Minerva is listed as having had nine children with five living, so one must have died in infancy. In the 1910 US Federal Census Minerva is still living with Samuel and his wife and two girls. She is listed as having nine children with four living. Also living with them and probably helping out on the farm is a young man "Charley", with John and Mary living next door. It appears that this young man "Charley" is the son of daughter Louisa Adeline who was single when he was born. Minerva was affectionately called "Nervie" by her friends because they claimed she wasn't afraid of the devil himself. One family story says she was a real pioneer woman who loved to smoke a stone pipe as well as chew. Another story is that she and a neighbor lady tailed confederate soldiers who had stolen a race horse. The ladies returned the favor and stole the horse back. (Stories courtesy of Marty Patton.) Highlights from her obituary state she was 94 years and 3 days old when she died on New Years day, was married to Thomas Stockstill, came to Missouri in 1843 and settled in Dade county, Thomas served in the Mexican war and he and his sons in the Civil war and afterward came to Cedar county, made her home with son John (census data and death notice say Sam) on the old homestead three miles southwest of Filley, leaves four children - Louisa, Martha, John and Sam - and was a member of the Christian church. She died on a Saturday and buried the next day in Sandridge Cemetery She is near five of her children Generation 4 (cont.) (John, Tom, Sam, Martha and Louisa). JAMES THOMAS "TOM"5 STOCKSTILL (Thomas Gilbert4 (Hester) Stockstill, Elisha3, Zebedee or Zebadiah2, Thomas Stockstill /1 Stogsdill) was born on 16 Mar 1847 in Dadeville, Dade Co, MO. He died on 11 Aug 1903 in Cedar Co, MO. He married Sarah Louisa Clark, daughter of Absalom Kendrick Clark and PolixnoPolinno "Polly" Penelope Hall, on 30 Sep 1868 in Cedar Co, MO. She was born on 30 Sep 1851 in Cedar Co, MO. She died on 01 Mar 1933 in Benton Twp, Cedar Co, MO. Notes for James Thomas "Tom" Stockstill: Tom Stockstill was the third son of Thomas and Minerva and was born in Dade Co. See the narrative for his father for his exploits as a teenager during the Civil War. This must have been an exciting and fearful time for a teenage boy during the war, as well as being "head of the household" while his father and two older brothers were off fighting in the war. After the war he married Sarah Clark in Cedar Co in 1868 at the age of 21. It is interesting to note that he and Sarah were married 10 days before his father died of unknown causes. In the 1870 US Federal Census he, his wife and young daughter (she is named after both of her grandmothers) are living next door to his mother in Benton Twp, Cedar Co, is a farmer with a personal estate value of 400 and cannot write. I am not able to find them anywhere in the 1880 US Federal Census. In the 1900 US Federal Census they continue to live in Benton Twp with three of their children and a 6 year old boarder. They have been married for 31 years and Sarah is listed as having 7 children with 6 living. (Probably "Danny" who died in infancy.) He continues to farm, owning his farm and can read and write. Tom died in 1903 and according to his obituary he died at his home in North Benton precinct on the farm where he had lived for 19 years. He died of consumption (TB) after illness for four years. He was a member of he Christian church and the Clintonville lodge I.O.O.F. which conducted the funeral service. Generation 5 (cont.) Notes for Sarah Louisa Clark: In the 1910 US Federal Census, Sarah has been a widow for seven years and she is listed as head of household. She is listed as number of children born: 6 and number of children living: 6. She is living by herself except for a 16 yr old boarder/orphan who is living in the household and is a farm laborer on her general farm. In the 1920 US Federal Census Sarah is still on the family homestead with daughter Nola and children living with her, although Sarah is not listed as head of household. She is listed as being able to read and write. Son Marion and his family are living next door. In the 1930 US Federal Census Sarah is now living with son Louis and his family, daughter Nola having remarried the year before. She is 16 years old at first marriage. It is not known if they are living on the family homestead. Sarah died in 1933 at the age of 81 years. Her son Louis completed part of the death certificate and lists her father as Absalom Clark born in KY and mother Matilda Hall born in KY, but this information as it relates to her mother's first name does not appear to be correct. According to her Certificate of Death she died of mitral insufficiency. According to her obituary she had seven children with five living. One boy, Danny died as a child and Martha Alice has died. The obituary also says "she united with the Christian church in early life and was a faithful member of that organization. Funeral services were held at the home of her son, Louis Stockstill, near Pacetown." James Thomas "Tom" Stockstill and Sarah Louisa Clark had the following children: 33. i. MAGNOLIA "NOLA"6 STOCKSTILL (James Thomas "Tom"5, Thomas Gilbert4 (Hester) Stockstill, Elisha3, Zebedee or Zebadiah2, Thomas Stockstill /1 Stogsdill) was born on 28 Jun 1884 in Cedar Co, MO. She died on 25 May 1978 in Lebanon, Linn Co, OR. She married (1) WILLIAM "WILLIE" ALFRED FAIN, son of George Washington Fain Jr and Jane Elizabeth Gash, on 22 Nov 1903 in El Dorado Springs, Cedar Co, MO. He was born on 31 Mar 1882 in Yavapai Co, AZ. He died on 13 Feb 1913 in Cedar Co, MO. She married (2) JOHN PHILY STEWART, son of William Merchant Stewart and Eliza Jane Pliley, on 25 Nov 1929 in Nevada, Vernon Co, MO. He was born on 21 Aug 1866 in MO. He died on 17 Sep 1947 in Cass Co, MO. Notes for Magnolia "Nola" Stockstill: Nola first appears in the 1900 US Federal Census and her name is "Magnolia", age 15 and the youngest child living at home with her parents and siblings. It is the only document giving her name as "Magnolia" that I have found, including marriage and death certificates and Social Security documents. Three years later in 1903 at the age of 18 yrs, she married. On the Generation 6 (cont.) marriage certificate, both she and her husband are listed as living in the Olymphia community of Cedar Co, and being married in El Dorado Springs. After her husband's death, Feb 1913, Nola returned to her widowed mother's home (the Stockstill homestead) and one month later, 15 Mar, Willie "Bill" was born at the Stockstill home. He must have been given his father's nickname and was called "Willie" as a child but went by Bill as an adult. The family continued to live in the Stockstill household and Nola worked as a clerk at the nearby Pacetown store. Ruby basically raised her two younger brothers while her mother worked. She always said she never had a childhood because of her early responsibilities. In the 1920 US Federal Census Nola and the three children are still living with Sarah Stockstill in Benton Twp and Nola is a clerk. On 25 Nov 1929 Nola, at age 45, married John P. Stewart in Nevada, Vernon Co, MO. (I recall Mother (Ruby) saying that she would not remarry until the children were "on their own".) He was a widower and farmer from Harrisonville, MO, his first wife having died between 1920 and 1929. John and his first wife apparently had two adopted children. In our family he was always called "Mr Stewart". Cousin Sharon has said that her father Bill, at age 16, felt he had been abandoned when his mother remarried. He must have been living with relatives at this time but I cannot find him anywhere in the 1930 US Federal Census. However, according to the 1940 US Federal Census Bill was living in Emerson, Mills Co, IA in 1935. The 1930 US Federal Census shows John and Nola living in Grand River, Cass Co, MO. She is 45 yrs old and he is 63 yrs old. John is a farmer and they have a 12 yr old boy as a lodger. In the 1940 US Federal Census they are living at the same location. They own their home, both completed an 8th grade education, and lived at the same location in 1935. He is 73 yrs old and she is 55 yrs old. They lived south of Harrisonville in Cass Co probably until he died. The house was an old two-story farm house without electricity or running water. There was a handpump well in the front yard. I remember visiting them at least once and there was an outhouse and oil lamps. He died about 1947 and in 1949 Nola moved to Lebanon, OR where Bill was living and working. After Bill remarried in Jul 1966 she lived alone. According to a Social Security claim she was living at 733 Park, Apt 2, Lebanon in Jul 1968. She died at the age of 93 yrs, on 15 May 1978, as a result of a CVA (Cerebrovascular Accident) shortly after admission to the Lebanon Community Hospital. At the time of her death she was living a 350 S. 8th, Lebanon. As I recall, she had had a stroke several years earlier. She is buried in the Lebanon Odd Fellows and Masonic Cemetery. Notes for William "Willie" Alfred Fain: Will (he was also called Willie) Fain was born in Yavapai Co, AZ Mar 1882 after his parents and siblings had gone by wagon train from Collins, MO to Yavapai Co in 1878 where they remained for several years. As a small boy he would have gone with his family to Fresno, CA in the 1886 to 1890 time frame. In the 1900 US Federal Census he is in Benton Twp, Cedar Co. as an 18 yr old living with his parents and is "at School". Three years later as a 21 year old he married 18 year old Nola Stockstill on 22 Nov 1903. They were married by a minister in El Dorado Springs, Cedar Co. Their first child, Minnie was born a year later but died when she was 14 months old of Meningitis. Second daughter, Ruby was born 9 months later in Nov 1906, followed by Newell in Feb1909. The 1910 US Federal Census finds them in Cottonwood, Yavapai Co, AZ with 3 yr old Ruby and 13 month old Newell. He is working as a farmer on a truck farm. They would have gone by train, probably to escape the cold, damp winters of southwest MO. Most likely he would have gone for his health since a hot, dry climate was considered to be a treatment for people with TB. It is not known how long they stayed in AZ but three years later, 13 Feb 1913 he died at the age of 30 years in Cedar Co and is buried in Sandridge Cemetery. According to his obituary he went west twice in search of health. It is not know when he was in AZ the second time, but most likely it was prior to his marriage in 1903. The obituary was written by Mose Gash (his nephew) and goes on to say "Willie belonged to no church but professed faith in Christ four years ago, and left a bright and glorious message of peace and comfort to the sorrowing relatives. That he had no fear of death that he was ready and willing to go to meet his God who had so graciously pardoned his sins." His son Willie (Bill) was born the month after his death. Generation 6 (cont.) William "Willie" Alfred Fain and Magnolia "Nola" Stockstill had the following children: i. MINNIE7 FAIN was born on 01 Dec 1904 in Cedar Co, MO. She died on 27 Feb 1906 in Cedar Co, MO. Notes for Minnie Fain: Minnie was the first born child, born just one year after her parents married. When she was 15 months old she died of Menigitis. 55. ii. RUBY L CUNNINGHAM was born on 11 Nov 1906 in Ceder Co, MO. She died on 17 Oct 1985 in St Francis Hospital, Tulsa, Tulsa Co, OK. She married Forrest Truesdell "Trues" Cunningham, son of Edward Payson Cunningham and Henrietta "Etta" Arnn, on 18 May 1934 in Bartlesville, Washington Co, OK (at the Presbyterian Manse). She was born on 17 Jun 1928 in Graham, Nodaway Co. MO. She died on 18 Jan 2002 in Shenandoah, Page Co, IA. Roy Fain Stockstill and Beverly June Weaver had the following children: 65. i. LIVING STOCKSTILL. He married LIVING NELSON. 66. ii. LIVING STOCKSTILL. She married LIVING JOHNSON. 67. iii. LIVING STOCKSTILL. He married LIVING BOLDRA. 54. VELMA7 STOCKSTILL (Louis "Lou"6, James Thomas "Tom"5, Thomas Gilbert4 (Hester) Stockstill, Elisha3, Zebedee or Zebadiah2, Thomas Stockstill /1 Stogsdill) was born on 14 Sep 1911 in Olympia, Cedar Co, MO. She died on 21 Aug 1986 in Springfield, Greene Co, MO. She married James Lester Lewallen, son of Asa R. Lewallen and Edna Belle Lester, on 18 May 1941 in Aldrich. He was born on 04 Oct 1910 in Jerico Springs, Cedar Co, MO. He died on 21 Apr 2005 in El Dorado Springs, Cedar Co, MO. James Lester Lewallen and Velma Stockstill had the following child: 68. i. LIVING LEWALLEN. She married LIVING JONES. 55. RUBY L7 CUNNINGHAM (Magnolia "Nola"6 Stockstill, James Thomas "Tom"5 Stockstill, Thomas Gilbert4 (Hester) Stockstill, Elisha3 Stockstill, Zebedee or Zebadiah2 Stockstill, Thomas Stockstill /1 Stogsdill) was born on 11 Nov 1906 in Ceder Co, MO. He was born on 08 Jun 1908 in Craig Co, OK (7 miles South of Edna, KS). He died on 05 Sep 1964 in St. John's Hospital, Tulsa, Tulsa Co, OK. Notes for Ruby L Cunningham: In the 1910 US Federal Census, Ruby is a 3 yr old living with her parents and younger brother in Cottonwood Precinct, Yavapai Co, AZ. Her father is listed as being a farmer on a truck farm on his own account, and renting his farm. Her parents had three children, the oldest having died. Yavapai Co is where her father had been born and where his uncle had a ranch. The family had moved to AZ for her father's health. She had a great fear of water as she almost drowned when she fell into a canal behind the house where they were living. Her father died of Generation 7 (cont.) TB when she was 6 years old. By this time the family had moved back to Cedar Co, MO. At the time of her father's death, her mother was 8 months pregnant and moved back with her own mother to have the baby. They continued to live with her grandmother while her mother worked in a nearby country store (Pacetown). Ruby felt she never really had a childhood since she was essentially responsible from an early age for raising her two younger brothers while her mother worked at the store. She remembers standing on a wooden box at the sink washing dishes. When she was about 12 to 14 years old she contracted flu and almost died during the dreaded 1918 Spanish Influenza Epidemic which killed millions of people worldwide. Because her father, paternal grandparents and other close relatives died of TB, she was always very careful to maintain good hygiene within her own family. Although she never tested positive for TB, it was always one of her greatest fears. In the 1920 US Federal Census, the family is still living with Ruby's grandmother although her mother is listed as head of household and as working as a store clerk. Only the youngest brother is listed as attending school. Ruby (13 yrs old) and Newell (11 yrs old) are not in school. The children in this community attended a one room school (Sand Ridge, which is still standing) which was first through eighth grades. After eighth grade children had to move into town and stay with relatives to complete their schooling, which the family could not afford to do. Thus, Ruby only received an 8th grade education (which is probably equivalent to a 12th grade education by today's standards). She was excellent in math and spelling. In about 1924 when she was about 18 yrs old, she moved to Bartlesville, OK where she had family living. She soon got a job with a family who was employed as an executive with Phillips 66 Petroleum Company. She was a live-in house keeper and took care of their two young boys. The address was 1112 S. Johnstone Ave. She worked there for about 10 years until her marriage. In the 1930 US Federal Census she is listed in their household as a "Servant". In the 1940 US Federal Census she is married and living in Dewey with her husband and 4 yr old Forrest. Maridell is not listed in the census since she was born about a month after the census was taken. The family is living at 1225 N. Choctaw which they own and where they were also living in 1935. Ruby was a product of a poor, single parent family as well as the depression which was reflected in everything she did for the rest of her life. She was frugal, hard working, and an excellent money manager. She was fiercely loyal and dedicated to her family, After they moved to the Tuxedo community in 1941 on ten acres belonging to her inlaws, she kept a large garden, canned, raised chickens for food and eggs, made butter, and raised caves to butcher for food. This was especially the case during and immediately following WWII. After her daughter started first grade she went to work as a cafeteria worker in the same school, and was quickly promoted to supervisor. The 1956 Tuxedo City Directory lists her a cook at the Highland Pk School. Even after moving into their newly built house in 1949, she continued to raise chickens for food, and sold eggs, but her main cash crop was pigs. She would buy piglets in the fall, take home cafeteria garbage to feed them and sell the adult pigs the next spring. (This was on five acres in the country.) She did this for a number of years. After her husband was transferred to Tulsa in 1959 she stayed active, providing child day care for several families up to the time of her death. She attended First Church of the Nazarene until her husband's death, when she then became a member of the Central Church of the Nazarene. In 1979 she moved to University Village in Tulsa, a retirement community, living in an independent efficiency apartment until her death in 1985. She died in the hospital as a result of complications following surgery for a ruptured aortic aneurysm. Notes for Forrest Truesdell "Trues" Cunningham: Notes for Truesdell's parents describe his early years. Cousin Paul tells the following story passed down from his father. "Daddy said that when he was a boy living in AR (Conway Co) Ed and his family would periodically visit. They would visit Etta's sister and her family and then they would come by and visit with grandpa (Alfred). One time when they came for a visit Truesdell wanted to ride a bull. He said that he was rather insistent on riding. He selected a large calf that daddy said was pretty gentle. Daddy and Morrice held Generation 7 (cont.) the bull and helped Truesdell get on. He didn't have a cinch or rope. He just held on the fur of the calf. When daddy and Morrice released the calf, it began to run toward the creek, bucking some. When it reached the creek, it planted its heels and stopped. Truesdell flew over its head and landed in the mud on the other side of the creek. Daddy said that seemed to satisfy Truesdell's desire to be a bull rider. Truesdell may have wanted to test his skills because his father had been a cowboy." Truesdell graduated from Wann, Nowata Co, High School in 1926 and moved the same year with his family to Bartlesville. He attended the Bartlesville Business School for two years then worked for a short time in the mailing department of the Examiner Enterprise Newspaper. On 21 Jan 1929 he went to work in the office of the Dewey Portland Cement Co, initially as a stenographer. Eventually, he became the chief clerk and office manager. Truesdell and Ruby were married 18 May 1934 at the home of the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church and started their married life in Dewey, OK. in 1934. Don Tyler, General Manager of the cement plant gave them a house on the south edge of Dewey rent free for a year as a wedding present. The address is thought to be 116 S. Wyandotte Ave. In the 1940 US Federal Census, they are living at 1225 North Choctaw which was near the cement plant, and own their home valued at $1500. They were also living in the same home in 1935 and it is likely that they had recently moved there from their "free" house. Truesdell is listed as having been born in KS and having completed one year of college. He is listed as Chief Office Clerk in a cement plant, working a 40 hour week, working 52 weeks in 1939, earning $2000 per month. Ruby is listed as having completed 8 years of school and in Home Housework. It was about Feb 1941 (when Maridell was nine months ole) that they moved to the Tuxedo community between Dewey and Bartlesville, This was 10 acres with a house owned by his parents which had the address of Rt 1 Box 301. When they moved there they added running water and a bathroom. They purchased the property 6 Nov 1942 for about $2250.00, the address eventually becoming 710 NE Washington Blvd. On 16 Jul 1947 they sold the house and 3 acres to P. W. and Ruby Tate. Prior to selling the house they had build a small 2 BR cinder block house on 2 acres (now 3916 NE Wisconsin St) behind the main house where they lived for two years while a house was being build on the remaining 5 acres. They moved into the new house and assumed a mortgage of $11,488.00 on 8 Apr 1949. The address for this new home became 746 NE Washington Blvd (Hwy US 75). On 14 Jul 50 they rented then sold the block house and 2 acres to Glenn and Nancy Blair for $5500. On 18 Sep 1958 they sold the house to Ernest and Maud Tannehill when Trues was transfered to the new cement plant in NE Tulsa and where he was working at the time of his death. They purchased a new construction home at 11404 E. 4th Place in a new subdivision in northeast Tulsa. Because of his age, job and family he was low on the priority list to serve in WWII. However, at the time the war ended, he had been scheduled to take his physical for induction and would have been called up had the war not ended when it did. Trues was a quiet spoken, kind and generous man. Occasionally a worker from the Dewey cement plant would come to the house to ask for a loan of money to last until payday. (The first black person I ever remember seeing was a man who came to our door for assistance) No one was ever turned away and he was always repaid. He was a devout Christian and a student of the Bible all his adult life and gave a minimum of 10 percent of his income to the church. He was a founding member of the Eastside Church of the Nazarene in Bartlesville, eventually transferring (probably about 1951) to the Dewey Church of the Nazarene. After moving to Tulsa, they attended First Church of the Nazarene until his death. He was always active in the church as Sunday school superintendent, church treasurer, adult Sunday school teacher, and song leader/choir director, all positions which he held for many years. He had a good singing voice and frequently sang solos and duets with his daughter. His only vanity that I can remember was his hair; He tried many different hair products over the years to prevent baldness. Although his hair was thin, he was successful in preventing baldness. He loved to fish, and played tennis in his younger years. He was not handy and had no ability fix things although he made outdoor concrete benches and ornamental items later in life. In early Generation 7 (cont.) March 1964 at age 55, while at work he experienced chest pain, saw the doctor but was not hospitalized until the next morning when he was taken by ambulance to the hospital. After his heart attack he eventually returned to work part-time but never fully recovered. He was hospitalized a second time with congestive heart failure in September. He died at the age of 56 of complications following his initial heart attack in March. Forrest Truesdell "Trues" Cunningham and Ruby L Cunningham had the following children: i. LIVING CUNNINGHAM. She married ROBERT WILLIAM LOOMIS. He was born on 03 May 1935 in Palo Alto, Santa Clara Co, CA (Palo Alto Hospital). He died on 07 Apr 2012 in Cannon Memorial Hospital, Pickens, Pickens Co, SC. Notes for Robert William Loomis: Bob was born 3 May 1935 in Palo Alto Hospital, Palo Alto, CA. He was raised by his parents, Joyce Dowswell (Clark) Loomis and Harry Everett Loomis in Mountain View and Los Altos, CA. He attended Dana Street School, Mountain View Elementary, and Mountain View High School (MVHS). He graduated from MVHS in 1953, and received his university education at the University of California, Davis (UCD), graduating with an AB Degree in American Civilization, May 1957. In Dec 1956 he married Darly Ann Jenkins. Three children from this marriage are Robert Scott, Kenneth Michael, and Teri Leanne Loomis. Bob and Darly were divorced in 1976. Upon graduation from UCD, and completion of a four year Army ROTC program, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant, Regular Army, Infantry, U.S. Army. He attended basic infantry Officers School, Ft. Benning, GA, and was assigned to Ft. Ord, CA where he served for two years. In 1959 he attended the Military Police School, Ft. Gordon, GA and was subsequently assigned to Giessen Post, Germany in 1960 as a military police officer. In 1963 he transferred to Military Intelligence Branch, attended special and advanced MI training at Ft. Holabird, MD. Upon completion of training he served as a intelligence officer in many varied assignments. His assignments included Sacramento, CA, Vietnam (twice), Iran and Washington, D.C. Upon completion of over 23 years of service in Sep 1980, he retired at the United States Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM), Arlington Hall Station, VA, where he had served as INSCOM Public Affairs Officer. While assigned to Washington D.C from 1973-77, he attended American University, receiving a Graduate Certificate in Public Relations. On 11 Dec 1976 Bob married Maridell Cunningham. Following his retirement he accompanied Maridell (a USAF Nurse and Officer) on her many assignments to Colorado (twice), Japan, and Maryland. Prior to Maridell's assignment to Japan in 1984, Bob worked as a financial planner. While in Japan from 1984-87, Bob taught professional writing courses for members of the USAF and civilians. He was also employed as the Testing Officer for the USAF Education Center. He also taught English at a local Misawa English Language School. While in Japan he applied for graduate school of the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. Upon Maridell's assignment back to CO, Bob embarked on an intensive 22 month, 61 semester hour graduate program in Counseling and Human Services, graduating May 1989. Maridell was reassigned to Andrews AFB, MD and Bob was employed as Mental Health Counselor at the St. Mary's Co, MD County Health Department Mental Health Services, Leonardtown, MD until 1994. Subsequent to the move to our retirement home in Pickens, SC in 1994, Bob was employed as a Mental Health Counselor, Greenville Mental Health Center, Greenville, SC until he retired in 2003. After this "final" retirement, Bob devoted much of his time to the church. He enjoyed his work with Pastoral Care, Worship Ministry, and assisting our local Parish grow. He also enjoyed traveling at any opportunity and cutting grass with his large John Deer tractor on our 54 acres. Bob had a heart attack at home and died 7 Apr 2012. Generation 7 (cont.) Bob had an inquiring mind, loved educational pursuits, could fix almost anything, loved to build/refinish furniture, but most of all loved his family especially his two grandsons, Jeremy and Andrew. WILLIAM NEWELL7 FAIN (Magnolia "Nola"6 Stockstill, James Thomas "Tom"5 Stockstill, Thomas Gilbert4 (Hester) Stockstill, Elisha3 Stockstill, Zebedee or Zebadiah2 Stockstill, Thomas Stockstill /1 Stogsdill) was born on 11 Feb 1909 in Cedar Co, MO. He died on 18 May 1990 in Lorimor, Union Co, IA. He married Mary Rosella Foland, daughter of Benjamin Franklin Foland and Tersa Anne Young, on 26 Nov 1931 in Lawrence, KS. She was born on 07 Nov 1910 in Richland, Decatur Co, IA. She died on 27 Dec 1995 in Creston, Union Co, IA. Notes for William Newell Fain: Newell was born in Cedar Co, MO and must have traveled with his family to AZ when he was a baby, since he first appears in the 1910 US Federal Census as 1 3/12 year old living with his parents and older sister in Cottonwood, Vavapai, AZ where his father is farming. It appears from his father's obituary that the family traveled to AZ twice because of his father's poor health from TB. After his father's death in Cedar Co, Feb 1913, he, his younger brother and older sister went to live with their grandmother Stockstill on her farm while his mother worked as a clerk in the nearby country store. He and his brother were essentially raised by his older sister. In the 1920 US Federal Census he is 11 years old and still living in his grandmother's home. All the children attended the Sandridge one room school and completed an eighth grade education. According to what Rosella wrote in the 1981 Union Co family history book, in 1926 (at age 17) Newell set out for Springfield, Mo where he attended a business college before going north to IA in the fall of 1928. That year he started working on Raymond Breece's farm near Climax, IA. It was at a Farm Bureau meeting in Climax in 1929 that he met his future wife. In the 1930 US Federal Census he is 21 years old and a Lodger and a hired laborer for Lewis and Francis Allen on their "general farm" in West, Montgomery Co, IA. After their marriage in Nov 1931, they set out to farm all their married fives. They worked for farmers in the Red Oak area for five years. They then moved to Wheatland, WY in 1936 while expecting their first child, born Oct 1936 in Wheatland. They worked for a time for Rosella's Generation 7 (cont.) brother in Torrington, WY as their second child, Joan Rae was born in Oct 1938. The family of four then moved back to Osceola, IA in 1940. In the 1940 US Federal Census they are living in Liberty, Clarke Co, IA and Newell is working as a laborer on a farm with an income of $800 and renting their home. They moved to farms west of the Dodge Center Church in Union Co in 1942. Little Joan Rae was fatally injured when hit by a car that year. A second son, Dannie was born in Apr 1943 and daughter Lana was born in May 1945. In 1949 Newell and Rosella purchased their farm from Ira Walker. This farm was in Dodge township, 2 1/2 miles north of the Dodge Center Church. This sprawling river bottom farm with rolling hills and forests was home to their children who were raised there and educated in the Afton-East Union systems. During those early years in IA they would weekly take cream and eggs to town to earn $6.00- 8.00. They would always save 50 cents to buy gas to get back. They never drove their car during the week, but drove a two wheeled, horse drawn, cedar cart. Newell bought his first team of horses in 1940 and named them Bill and Barney. Since they were colts, he had to gently train them in the field. He used them until 1949, but he bought his first tractor in 1942. After they retired, they maintained their large home and farming operation. Their son Dan farmed the acres and operated the hog and cattle business. Newell's great love over the years was coon hunting and he owned several excellent dogs. He busied himself with large garden projects, visiting his friends, and keeping occupied with their six granddaughters. Notes for Mary Rosella Foland: Rosella wrote about herself and her family in the 1981 Union County history book, portions of which are as follows: Rosella was born at Grandriver, IA and was one of eleven children. Her family farmed north of Grandriver. When she was 15, the family moved to Kimball, NE and several of her sisters and brothers either settled in the Kimball or Grandriver areas. Rosella graduated from Kimball High School and then moved back to Essex, IA to live with her sister for two years. She took the Iowa teachers exam and taught school one year. She did not like teaching, however because of "four big boys, bigger than me!" But it was during that time that she met a strikingly handsome (dark hair, dark, eyes) young man named Newell Fain. In fact they met at a Farm Bureau meeting at Climax in 1929. He courted her with his 1929 Ford Roadster and by 1931 they decided to tie the knot. They left at Thanksgiving time to travel to Lawrence, KS to be married. The event cost them $5.00 and they celebrated by shining their shoes and visiting Newell's mother. At this time they set out to farm all their married lives. They worked for farmers in IA and WY until Newell bought their farm in Union Co in 1949. The Dodge Center Church was the hub of activity for the family. Rosella spent all her married life as housewife, mother and church worker. Her hobbies were sewing, knitting, and flower gardening. William Newell Fain and Mary Rosella Foland had the following children: i. JOAN RAE8 FAIN was born on 24 Oct 1938 in Lyman, Scotts Bluff Co, NE. She died on 18 May 1942 in Afton, Union Co, IA. Notes for Joan Rae Fain: Three year old Joan Rae was living with her parents and older brother on the Ira Walker farm just west of the Dodge Center church when she was struck by a car while crossing the highway just in front of their home. She died two days later as a result of a brain concussion. ii. DANNIE "DAN" RAY FAIN was born on 02 Apr 1943 in Afton, Union Co, IA. He died on 11 Apr 2014 in Creston, Union Co, IA. He married an unknown spouse (Never Married). Notes for Dannie "Dan" Ray Fain: Dannie "Dan" was born at home on the farm west of the Dodge Center Church in Apr 1943 and grew up on the family farm. He was in 4-H and developed an interest in Angus cattle and farming from his father. He graduated from East Generation 7 (cont.) Union High School in 1961 and enrolled in a business school in Omaha and worked for Union Pacific Railroad from 1961 - 1965. While in Omaha, he took six months of basic training in the Army Reserve at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO and was in the Reserves six years, serving in Omaha and Ames, IA, He also earned his pilot's license while living there. Dan left Omaha and enrolled in college in 1965. Pursuing a career in agriculture, he graduated from Iowa State University in 1969 with a B.S. degree in Agri Business. He was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Farm Loan Management from 1969 to 1973 when he returned to his parents' farm north of Afton to run a farm operation. With the cooperation of his father and brother he went into the management and operation of the hog, cattle and crop business. In 1976 Dan bought his own farm which, like his father's and brother's was on the Grand River in Dodge township, and spent many hours remodeling and redecoration the farm house. His farm operation as well as his dads' and brothers' farms were consolidated into one operation - the "Fain Farms, Inc" in 1986. Dan retired from the USDA in 2005 and from farming in 2009, and the farms were rented out. He purchased a home in Camp Verde, AZ, (in the same area where his father once lived as an infant) and lives between AZ and IA (Current as of 2011/12) Dan died 11 Apr 2014. The following is from a portion of his obituary. "Dannie "Dan" Fain, age 71, of Creston, Iowa died Friday, April 11, 2014. at HCI Care Service Hospice House in Creston. He was born the son of Newell and Mary Rosella (Foland) Fain on April 2, 1942 near Afton, Iowa. He graduated from the East Union High School in 1961. After serving his country for a short time with the United States Army and being Honorable discharged, he went on to attend Creston Junior College, Omaha Business School and then on to Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Agricultural Business. While attending school in Omaha, Dan worked at Union Pacific Railroad. After graduation from college in 1966, he began working for the Farmers Home Administration in Ames, Iowa. He was later transferred to Ankeny, Iowa then on to Toledo, Iowa. In 1974, Dan left the FHA, and devoted full time to farming with his father, and brother, Willard in the Afton and Lorimor, Iowa area. In 1986, Dan was asked to return to FHA and worked tn the Osceola, Iowa office until his retirement in 2008. During his time with the FHA. he was sent to Russia for 6 weeks, a trip that left a lasting impression on him. In 2009, Dan moved to Camp Verde, Arizona where he lived until August of 2013, when his health began to fail, at which time, he returned to his beloved Union County roots to Creston, Iowa. Dan was a quiet man, and though he never married, family was very important to him. He so enjoyed farming along side his brother, whether it be raising calves, row crop or baling hay,and was proud of what they were able to accomplish. He had a vast circle of friends, both in Southern Iowa and Camp Verde, Arizona area, many of them were like his extended family. Some invited him to go on trips, and some would stop for a visit and he always had time for everyone." 70. iii. LIVING FAIN. She married (1) LIVING HICKS. She married (2) DENNIS JOHN EASTER. He was born on 19 Mar 1946 in Des Moines, Dallas Co, IA. He died on 19 Nov 1999 in Clear Lake, IA. 71. iv. LIVING FAIN. He married LIVING SHIFFLETT. 57. WILLIE "BILL" EVERETTE7 FAIN (Magnolia "Nola"6 Stockstill, James Thomas "Tom"5 Stockstill, Thomas Gilbert4 (Hester) Stockstill, Elisha3 Stockstill, Zebedee or Zebadiah2 Stockstill, Thomas Stockstill /1 Stogsdill) was born on 15 Mar 1913 in Cedar Co, MO. He died on 03 Jan 1997 in Lebanon, Linn Co, OR. He married (1) RUTH WILHELMINA SMITH, daughter of Harvey Roy Smith Generation 7 (cont.) and Clara Myrtle Opitz, on 10 Sep 1939 in Rock Port, Atchison Co, MO. She was born on 17 Sep 1916 in Clarinda, Page Co, IA. She died on 16 Nov 1989 in Iowa City, IA. He married (2) ELENORE DEGREENE, daughter of Perry Lee DeGreene and Mary Alice "Lottie" Harlow, on 02 Jul 1966 in Reno, Washoe Co, NV. She was born on 14 Dec 1914 in De Ridder Beauregard Co, LA. She died on 04 Jun 1995 in Lebanon, Linn Co, OR. Notes for Willie "Bill" Everette Fain: Willie was born one month after his father died of TB. He was born in his grandmother's house and the young family grew up in his grandmother's home and was basically raised by his older sister while his mother worked at a nearby country store. His mother remaried when he was 16 years old. According to his daughter, he felt he had been abandoned by his mother. I am unable to find him in the 1930 US Federal Census but he probably followed his brother into the farming community in southwest IA.
